hard shifting cold and warm.

Iv got a 1993 Toyota 4Runner V6, 2WD, automatic transmission.
Its seems that when I first start it and put it in gear it jumps pretty hard and I gotta let my foot off the gas to get it to shift out of 1st gear and it jumps pretty hard again.
After that its usually pretty good about shifting correctly once it warms up but often times I feel a nice bump if I have to take my foot off the gas suddenly in traffic.
What could this be? Also please let me know if you need anymore info.

Maintenance info would be nice and what rpms are at idle in park or nuetral would be nice info to start with
 
Gotcha. No worries man.
When I first start it, it runs about 1300 - 1400 rpms until it warms up. On first take off it will hit 4000 rpms before it will shift unless I let my foot off the gas.
The transmission was ripped off another 1993 4Runner. It was in pretty good shape and functioned properly so I took it. Its always had a little bump when its cold but its getting worse. The fluid is clear and red, looks good, level is good.
 
Did you switch tcm when you swapped transitions and torque converters? I'm not familiar with these if the ECM and tcm are the same or not.

Actually I had it done at a shop. But no all the parts off the original transmission where used on the new one other than some seals which are new. I knew that would come back and bite me in the hind quarters.
 
It's just hard to tell it may be the control module or it could be the transmition. Do you have a cel or anything?

I understand it can be a pain to diagnose something you cant see. No worries. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.
Actually no I don't to my Surprise. I would have thought it would trigger something but it hasn't...... unless the light has gone out or something.
 
Mine shifts hard when its cold also, but shifts at a lower RPM unless my foot is in it. Check if the cable from the trans to the throttle body is adjusted, no slop when when throttle is closed. Mine was real loose and it seemed to shift better when I took the slop out.
 
Nooooo you will ruin your tranny if that is tight when at idle that is the kick down cable and it should be lose until the throttle plate is all the way open. It should be just tight then.

Just checked that. It's not super loose but it does have a little wiggle room.
Also just to clarify. The outside weather plays no factor in how the truck shifts. What I ment by cold was as in completely cooled down as in after it has been sitting all night or all day.
Also I noticed something else this morning. It feels like its slipping a bit when I was sitting in traffic. Every time I put my foot on the gas i could feel a bump...very small but a bump none the less. Also when it shift from first to second I hear a kind of whistlely chirp noise. Almost sounds like the air brakes releasing on an 18 wheeler but you really gotta listen to hear it.

Check the manual for the adjustment! I was wrong you don't just tighten it until its not loose!! there is a procedure! Sorry about the misinfo..

I get that same bump sometimes when I start off from a stop. I think shifting hard when its been sitting awhile and cooled down is a common feature of these transmissions. Shifting hard when warm is something else.
 
Will do. Ill see what I can find on that. That is a pretty good place to start being that it started to do this after I got it back from the shop when they installed the new trans.
Iv heard that several times but there has got to be a cause to it. If I find anything ill be sure to post it.
 
Check slop in the rear end turn parking brake on on level surface put trans in nuetral with engine off get under car see if you can twist drive line

Will do. What should I be looking for other than the obvious movement of the shaft?
I replaced the U joints not but a few weeks ago so I know its not that. They had almost completely fallen apart.
 
Are you sure your fluid level is right?

It’s hard to get an accurate reading. The tranny has to be within a specific temp (I shoot an IR thermometer at my pan to see if I’m in range).

Too high or too low, and you won’t get an accurate reading on the dipstick (don’t have temp range in front of me right now).

I checked it a couple days ago and it seemed fine but now that you say that ill have another look.

I'm more worried about slop in the rearend. A little slop is normal but not much.

I just checked it before I left for work and sure enough iv got quite a bit of slop there. It moves a bit more than I would think is normal. What does that mean? Am I screwed? Im screwed arent I?
