Hard starting/Running rich

hey guys,
Got another question. Here lately when I start my truck both cold and warm, it takes forever to start and when it does it smells like its running VERY rich but only for about 30 seconds or so after starting. I just did a complete tune up ( plugs, wires, coil, and o2 sensor ). Im thinking its the cold start valve, or injector as its sometimes called but just wanted to get some opinions before I dropped the cash on one. I can get a Intermotor one through Rock Auto for $65, or should I pull one from a junkyard and have someone locally rebuild it. I think this problem is where a lot of my fuel is going, im getting about 18MPG with a 80/20 mix of highway/city driving. Thanks for any help!

try starting it for a few seconds. then quit.

pull the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator. is it full of gas? if it is, you found your problem. your fuel pressure regulator diaphragm has failed.

the cold start injector is easy enough to test to see if it works, before spending money on replacing a perfectly functional one.

I havent had a chance to test the fuel pressure regulator yet, between work and trying to finish out this semester at college i leave the house before sunlight and get home when its dark. Got a few days off coming up soon, gonna check it out. From the research I have done i'm leaning towards the FPR. Ill get back to you when I figure it out.

if it is the fuel pressure regulator, it isn't hard to check. takes about 2 minutes, and involves pulling the vacuum hose off of it. if it is full of gas, it's bad. do the check after attempting to start it, or after it has been running. don't wait overnight to check it.

If it is the FPR that's bad on your truck, the part number on Rock Auto is 1580191. I work for advanced auto parts, and we cant even get the part without ordering it directly from the factory and its $100. Its only like $65 on Rock Auto.
