Hard to start when cold(cranks ok)

Its been awhile since I have been on here but I really dont know where to turn next. So lately my 1991 4runner (has the V6) has been acting up, it wont start right away when its cold or hasn't been driven in a couple hours(it cranks ok). After it starts(after multiple attempts of running the starter) it runs just fine, and right after being driven(warm) it starts right up on the first turn over of the engine.

On one of the crank no start episodes the check engine light stayed on for a couple seconds then went out. I pulled the code and its code 12 "no rpm signal to ecu after 2 seconds of cranking". The book says its distributor related and to test the resistance of the plug. I did, however my book says resistance is supposed to be 140-160 on all terminals. I get 256 in all terminals.

So what I am asking is if anyone can tell me the resistance numbers for the distributor and ignition coil for the 1991 model year with the 3vze. I want to cross reference my book and test these to make sure I am barking up the right tree.

Sounds like the pick up is grounding out or weak to me. Did you spray out the dizzy with a air hose? Maybe some BPC to clean it up. The pick up also has coil related issues if the coil is getting weak it will cause all kinds of odd numbers when testing the system. I would start with a coil test make sure your getting consistent voltage out then work the problem towards the dizzy.

Thanks for the link. I checked it out and I heard somewhere that the 1989-91.5 4runners with the V6 are slightly different than the 1991.5-95 when it comes to ignition and wiring. Do you think the resistance numbers are the same?

That may be tru, but I don't have a pre-'93 3vze manual to cross-reference, most of what I have is for the 22re. If you do a bunch of google searches for f4 runner service manuals, you might find one for pre-93 models online somewhere. I did some searching around and found a couple, but they are really hard to maneuver in and never found the coil specs.

If you wanna really make sure the years cross over, just search for the part numbers of the coils for both years on toyotapartsdeal.com. If they are the same p/n, you're good to go with the pdf file I uploaded for you.
