Harder run plans?

I just saw your build thread J-money.. twin sticks? That's it, I'm out! I would just be too overcome with jealousy watching you crawl over everything with my dream setup to be able to do this run with you. :crybaby:

But in all seriousness, I'm looking forward to this run. I've never done any of the trails at Big Bear, so I'll let you lead the way onto whichever ones you want. I'm game for anything, even the stuff in the video Connor just posted, assuming everyone else is game for it too.

Hopefully I can get sliders before June 29th!

Sounds good. I know you were thinking of savage right?

Ya ya dual cases are overrated... :) its been the best thing i have done to the truck for sure. I said I wouldnt do it, but i got tired of burning up the clutch, and i got a smoking deal on the adapters and build the thing myself so it wasnt too pricey.

Anyways im looking forward to meeting you all. hopefully some other will have interest. We can maybe go Dishpan to holcomb creek and run that too. Or just john bull and see where the day leads.

:thumb: I just ran it a month or two ago. It's a fun trail.

Pretty sure I'd die on the Rubicon.

No way. im surprised everyone thinks all these trails are that hard. The rubicon is nothin. It would be a a hard day if you wanted to day run it. but when you take 4-5 days to do it its mostly chillen.

If you can make it through the stuff in big bear then you can make that.

just gotta get out and start trying these trails

We should run that at some point too haha

I'm down to run Pancake Rock again haha.

J-money: You know of any decent trails between you and Ridgecrest? That's my hometown, so I'm up there quite a bit. We should run a trail up that way some time.

What will it require for "harder runs" in the future?

I have a 98 4runner, lift is set at 2-2.5" I think, 5 speed, factory locker. Right now 265/70-17 BFG ATs on Tundra rims. Looking to get Cooper 275/70-17 tires when they are back in stock, so gives me a little more width and little more height. I also think Im going to get Savage sliders and skids. I already have a Schrockworks front bumper. Rear bumper will have to wait, not enough cash!

I have not wheeled the Yota yet so do not know how I will be in the woods with it, and I have not wheeled a stick shift in years hah, my Jeep Rubicon is auto so all my Big Bear runs have been with auto and lockers front and rear so even if Im a newbie in Cali and on rocks, that makes it somewhat doable (if not "cheating").

I like the 4runner on the highway more than the Jeep, and since I am done commuting with it I will not be scared to ding, scratch, or dent it....so I want to wheel it a lot in the next year and do some camping and road trips. I do not want to lift it more though (just takes so much cash!) nor go bigger than 32"s because I do not want to spend the money re-gearing....I already have done that in past on vehicles, just one mod after the other and spending so much money the addiction to building them doesnt stop. I just want to enjoy the 4runner with as few mods as possible and wheel it more than looking at it or putting parts on it! haha So will harder trails require 33s-35s?

Thanks

There really is nothing off 395. But you can always make a quick side trip to calico or something like that on your way out. Just stay on the 15 and go to barstow. and once your ready to go just head out the 58 to four corners. Calico is cool one in awhile. You can run both the trails there in about 1.5 to 2 hours. THey are short. You can always make a side trip out to cougar buttes. But that is about 35 minutes from the 395/15 split

So will harder trails require 33s-35s?

Thanks

John bull in BB is probably the only one up there that 33's will make a real big difference on. ANd i ran my 5spd with 33's and stock 4.10's for a long time it was real good. I would honestly shoot for the 255/85r16's and call it done. or 285/75r16. They are easy to fit and 33's will help out with every trail your on. Even on bumpy dirt road stuff because the more sidewall the smoother it is.

The only stuff that really requires 35's out here is Hammerdown at cougar buttes and the hammers. and I have only made a couple trails at the hammers(lower big johnson, tack hammer, claw hammer, aftershock) , but were working on more. I really want to make sledge. My buddy has in his taco but broke both times he tried. I just get tired of breaking stuff.

stick to 33's

stick to 33's

I bought my 3rd Gen with Tundra rims already on it so I have 17" rims. The previous owner said 33s would rub my upper control arms possibly requiring wheel spacers? I am pretty sure I have 4:30, not that its a huge difference from 4:10 but if you ran 33s with 4:10s maybe I could deal with it. I am so used to V8s, only in the past few years have I rid myself of all V8s and I drive an 05 TJ Rubicon with 33s and regeared to 4.88 and still think its a dog, and my 4runner has 265/70-17 with 4:30 and 5 speed and it feels like a slug sometimes too hah...but I guess the difference between a 32 and 33 isnt that big of a deal either so might as well try to stuff 33s. Is there a narrow 33 for a 17" rim available in a C or D range? I really do not want E range but tire options seem limited compared to the old days of everyone having 15" rims!

Ya dude its a toyota 3.4 its gonna be slow. I have 5.29's and its gutless. Try a 285-70r17. with OEM or factory wheels you will need spacers but thats not a big deal. get the smallest spacers possible.

Haha, thank Jmoney. Wow 5.29s and 33s (or 35s) and it still is a slug?!?! I dont have money to regear, but if it was cheaper to get done I totally would even now with 265/70-17s.

yea Im looking to go as low budget as possible....was hoping to slap tires on the current rims, and fork out cash for Savage sliders and skids so I could get this baby in the woods soon, then save up later for the rear bumper. Didnt know if CBs were required for these runs if so Id need that, and I need to get some kind of portable air compressor to air up after runs. I hate being the only Jeep on runs without one and everyone takes off at end of day and I have to limp to the one lone gas station on top of Big Bear and takes 30 mins to air up with their pump hah.

Ill check out 285/70-17 options, would open up my choices as 275/70-17 is super limited.

Thanks for your help!!!

Are you guys so hard core Yota that I couldnt try to use my Jeep on a harder run until I get tires, sliders, and skids on my 4runner? My Jeep has 285s (33s) and 4.88 with lockers plus a winch, so I hopefully could hang. I am a rookie to this kind of west coast wheeling I admit, so I am no pro if these runs mean you have to be an expert driver and rock crawler. I grew up in Ohio and PA doing mud runs, ponds, streams ruining our vehicles with water and crud hah but it was fun. But yea just mud holes and muddy wood trails. It was not about technique other than knowing how to mash the pedal, rock back and forth when you are stuck, and yanking each other out. Pretty immature wheeling.

bring the jeep. I dont care at all. Brand specific runs suck. There is nothing that bad on any of these trails. Just a few small rocks here and there.
