Forgot "traded" in the subject line. Has anybody ever traded down?

Our family needs have changed slightly, and I would see benefit from a Tacoma. I know my 13' TE is worth more than a Tacoma DBL cab (TRD / Offroad), but I've never traded down. I'm not even sure what the TE with KDSS and Nav is "officially" worth. Anybody been in this situation? Looking for some advice.

Assuming you OWN the vehicle, then it's like any private sale. They'll cut you a check for the difference.

If there's a lien on it, then your payments will just decrease.

Just be careful of dealers' fuzzy math and tendency to round off numbers--because they will want to screw as much money out of you (trading down is gold mine of free money for them).

Trading down is tricky - Best bet is to sell your 4Runner and buy the Tacoma. If you don't want to go through the hassle of selling and just want to trade be warned: Your 4Runner will be worth less (to the dealership) trading down than it will trading up. Dealers do not like to part with their cash ever. You will lose almost all negotiating power and will likely end up paying close to list for the Tacoma while getting only wholesale for the 4Runner. Best thing you could do (besides selling it outright) is load up the Tacoma to the point of being even with the price you think the 4Runner is worth and start there. Wheels, tires, accessories, etc. You will lose if you do this but you can mitigate the loss a few different ways. I have traded down before and it's not pretty. I have also sold private party before and it is much better for the wallet.

I do have the title, so no financing issues.

1e, I was doing exactly what you suggested. The dealer has a Loaded DBL cab, even added leather.

I think selling the 4Runner would be hard, since a new vehicle wouldn't be much more than what I would ask. I wouldn't buy a used truck, when a new one was only a couple thousand more.
 
negotiate the new vehicle price FIRST then the trade and LIE to them about payoff. Do NOT let them call for a payoff until you feel you have the OTD price you want. KNOW what your trade is worth before going in there and you will be OK. I would start with a CARMAX 7 day quote and work from there

So you're saying to not let them know it's paid for? I typically use an autobroker, and he was having a hard time finding the value. They put the car out for bid, and there are almost ZERO TE's.

Find the Taco you want. Get the best price for it. Don't tell them you have a trade.

THEN tell them you have a TE for trade, after you've shopped it around and gotten a feel for what it's worth, and let them make you a deal.

Stifler is right. Make the deal without them knowing how much is owed (or paid off) with your vehicle. They will use the amount or lack thereof to fudge the numbers.
 
precisely! I may not know how to install a stage 6 ICON kit on my 4r but I do know a thing or two about buying vehicles lol.... that and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express

Puzzled by how "family" needs would benefit from a Taco vs a 4R, but that's your business.

Damnsight cheaper to buy a utility trailer, if you need to truck stuff.

You're going to take it in the shorts to trade a '13 TE no matter how you slice it. The highest profit center for most any dealer is used cars - guess how they do that?

+1, I have a 13 TE as well, only my wife and I. We both absolutely love it, in fact whenever I mention changing to another model, I'm told "no, you're getting another 4runner". Comfort, size, ride, comfort, quiet, did I mention comfort?? Towing...all points for the 4runner.
 
Trust me, I know the benefits of a 4Runner, I've owned one since 2006.

Older house = lots of remodeling and hauling. A trailer would work, but don't want to store it. We live in the city, so space is limited.

70lb lab who thinks she's a lap dog. Which is fine when she's clean, not soaking wet from swimming, or romping through the snow.

Bikes, lots of bikes.

Camping gear, lots of camping gear.

Don't even get me started with snowboards and winter gear.

We have a nice wagon for the family mobile.

My friends that drive Tacoma's seem to have an easy time packing for the great outdoors.

I have two Tacomas and 1 4Runner in my home. Packing stuff in the bed of the Tacoma is a little easier than making it fit in the 4Runner if you have to have the rear seats in the 4Runner. The Tacoma's rear seat room leaves a LOT to be desired in comparison to the 4Runner.

I put a boat load of miles on my vehicles as they're my company vehicles also. When the Tacoma goes to my daughter in 2 years I'll probably replace it with a new T4R TE. I think you're going to be sorry if you get rid of the TE...
