Has anyone ever rebuilt their starter?

Not just the plunger and contacts. Searched and haven't found any info so maybe it's not necessary. I was looking at the brushes and maybe the bearings while I was in there. If someone tells me it's not necessary then I probably wont do it.

No.
Just the contacts and the plunger are what you need. If the plunger got no groves then just the contacts.Just blow away the dust inside the starter and if you open the starter mechanism, apply some fresh high temp grease on the gear wheels.

I did a simple rebuild (contacts and plunger) on my 3.4 Taco when it had about 200k of abuse (lots of under water) on it. It was good until I sold it at 250 and is still running strong (my buddy has it).

IIRC it cost about $20 in parts.

I only did contacts and plunger when I rebuilt mine. From the information I could gather, it wasn't really worth doing the rest of it.
I had a buddy that ended up buying a rebuilt starter from Toyota. IIRC, he payed $120ish and it hasn't done him wrong in the 8-10 months he's had it. I think the cheapest place he found it was Camelback as well.
Here is a parts diagram I grabbed from Toyota when rebuilding mine a little over a year now. It should have all the other part numbers needed depending on what route you end up going.
