Has anyone had this happen to their ignition switch?

Hey everyone, had a problem starting my 99 this morning. Inserted key and turned and there was no resistance while turning the key. I can turn the key all the way to start but nothing. In fact it's stuck on the accessory position with all indicator lights showing. Had to take off the battery terminals.

Has anyone experienced this before?

I have not had it happen to me but a friend did, he was told it was becasue he had to many keys/ weight on his key chain and it wore the mechanism out. That is when I started having just my truck key and remote on there and a seperate key chain for my house and other keys. This also is good in case you ever get jacked they have wont end up with your address and house key.

Thanks Pikeman, I was thinking it was something like that but was hoping there was some kind of linkage or switch that might have come off.

I had to disconnect the battery since the thing was stuck on accessory and wouldn't turn off.

Good thing I got my Tundra so just had to load it up to come to work.

I'll check my manual on how to disconnect the switch.

The previous owner of my truck had that happen too. I hope it was fixed well enough to last my time with it :thumb3:

Tore it apart on Friday.

The Toyota service manual does not say anything about R&Ring the ignition tumbler. Thanks to the power of Google I found a Yahoo question about removing the switch and it took all of 5 minutes from start to finish to remove the pannel and broken parts.

Thought all I needed was this small piece of aluminum which should be a few dollars. I had to pay $300+ since the piece which was broked was a part of the bracket which holds the ignition switch and ignition key tumbler assembly to the steering column.

I can remove the inner piece I need but think I might not be able to insert it back into the bracket which is in place in my car.

The bracket is held to the column by these breakaway bolts. Once the correct torque is applied the heads break away.

Does anyone know how to service these breakaway bolts? I just got the parts and am at work and gotta go home to tackle the project. Was thinking of drilling the bolts out but it's hard cause the breakaway bolt breaks off leaving a point. Might have to grind or cut a flat surface on the bolt to drill.

Sounds like a real big pain!

First thing I would try is lubricating all lock cylinders with powder graphite.


If that doesnt fix it, then you can replace the lock cylinder on the ignition. They are fairly easy to swap out.
