I took my car in for the 10k service around November and brought up to my dealer that I saw a rumor this issue might have been fixed. He stated there was no update in his computer on the ticket and the issue was outstanding. I asked if he could call Toyota and speak with someone about it and never heard back. In January it went in for the 15k and I got the same response. This time I pushed the issue and was told to call Toyota because he didnt have any new information to tell me other then they are working on it. After doing many phone calls I express how unsatisfied I was with 10k miles passed and no new information. Toyota told me they dont have access to the ticket and only the dealer can get information from it. Toyota got on the dealer and they finally called me and said this issue is still present at this time, there is no fix from Toyota and it impacts 2012 and some 2011 4Runner's and Tacomas. Apparently the local rep will be in town next week and I asked him to press for more information. I want to know what has been done, what is being done and how long they estimate it will be till some repair is issued.

I too would like to know whose story is true. If I get more information I will post it.
 
i have had the same problem from day one on my 2011 i got last june. i work at lexus and was able to open a technical assistance case on it (TAS case) and talked with the representative and said a fix was coming soon. that was 3 months ago, nothing yet. he did ask if i could take a data recording with our dealer scan tool, which did, and that could further help get a fix out for the 2011's. its most likely going to be an TCM calibration to fix shift timing
 
Finally got an update. Basically Toyota is playing around with configurations to determine the appropriate fix. In short they are actively trying solutions, no estimate on how long it will take but the issue is still open.
 
I took Toyota to arbitration two weeks ago and had Gulf States Toyota representatives on the phone. They said they were told in a video conference that week (early February) that Toyota has decided to fix the problem of the transmission stutter/shudder by replacing the transmission and the engine computer with ones from from the 2012 4Runner. I was told the projected date was Jun 1, 2012, but could be as late as Sep/Oct 2012. The reason for the delay was that all parts are currently being used for new model production and they will issue a TSB to fix the issue once they feel enough parts are available. My reply to this statement was, "So what you are telling me is that Toyota is more concerned with making more cars and more money before fixing mine since they already have my money?". This elicited some giggles from the people in the room, but the representative said, "Well, yes.". What's even more amazing is that I received a letter from Toyota stating that they were aware that it was a problem and were looking for a fix, yet didn't feel it was a safety concern or de-valued the car, and to top it off, the arbitrator AGREED with Toyota and found in favor of Toyota. How is it that Toyota's evaluation of the problem and value of the car trumps MY concerns or perceived value of the car?!?

For all of those reading this website, I hope you spread the word to anyone considering buying a Toyota, to look elsewhere since there is NO customer service or customer loyalty. This is my third 4WD and second 4Runner, but it will definitely be my last. And, for those that have 2010-2011 4Runners and Tacomas, Toyota said the problem affected ALL of them, but not everyone complains about it so they never tried to fix it before. So, if you own one of these vehicles or know someone who does, start bugging Toyota to fix it and make them pay for putting out a known defect. Once you have a dealer service slip showing that you complained of the issue and Toyota serviced the car but did not fix it, you can call customer service and request arbitration. I figure if enough people start making Toyota pay for an arbitration hearing, then maybe they might decide to fix the problem sooner rather than later.

Any updates on this tranny shudder? I need "dealer ammo".

With the recent heat wave, mine has gotten really bad.

1-2 upshift under light throttle it has a "bump, bump, bump" shift, instead of a "normal" single bump. Under harder acceleration, it shifts perfectly.

Truck has to be warmed up first for this to occur.

I haven't been back to the dealer since I bought it, and the thought of taking it in frankly makes me feel sick. I'll update after I take it in.
 
Seriously? Your asking "us" for information? Did you do a Search? (Sorry, just had to go there) The "TSB" has been out there for quite a few months now, did you not read those threads? Am I misunderstanding your concerns?
Some folks have had their tyrannies replaced......not just re-flashed. Hope you had a great 4th.....now put down the bud light and come back to us......

^^^This makes no sense to me. During acceleration the 2-1 downshift? Huh?

Not sure about the wording of it (acceleration during 2nd to 1st downshift) but that is what you are looking for, I think. It is more like a gear hunt or stutter at low speeds like when you are in a parking lot looking for a parking space. Mine has it a little, even though my dealer says I already have the update.

Look at it as stomping the gas to pass and the tranny downshifts for higher rpm's

My buddy just had his transmission replaced for the same thing (his is mag grey, too!). He said it started with the "bump from the rear" then he finally took it in when it started stuttering between 1 and 2, and the transmission was replaced under warranty.
 
I've got all three issues:
  • drive train clunk
  • rough/shuddering upshift
  • overrev/harsh shift on 2-1 downshift
But I'm with Antman, the thought of those gorillas at the dealer molesting my truck makes me sick.
I've got 1 year left of my warranty. If I get the issues documented, at least, will they be covered after it expires?
 
Drive Train is 6/60K. So you should be good for a long time unless you have high miles already. In the past, if I noticed something within the warranty period and I had the dealer document it, yes, when and if it returned later it was covered. No guarantee's mind you, just my past experience. Be Safe
 
Developments?

Any other developments on this issue? My 8/2011 Trail has started to become more noticeable after about the 8,000 mile mark. I'm especially curious on:

1. Of those with trannies replaced, did that cure your issues after 10,000 miles? From the 4 threads I've read, the results seem mixed.
2. Are any people with 2012's experiencing the issue?
3. Why no TSB on it if they are voluntarily replacing 2011 transmissions and are aware of the problem?
4. Anyone know what part is responsible for this happening? I'm guessing something in the torque converter, but you'd think they'd only replace that instead of the whole transmission. I still find it hard to believe this can't be a fix via flash due to it not being evident in manual mode...

It sounds like it's present in all transmissions to some extent (mine is fairly rare and minor). I've done a ton of reading about this on multiple forums and the technical information is extremely scarce on this. I'm thinking I'll live with it if it doesn't get worse, but am curious what the details of the problem are and why Toyota isn't more forthcoming on the problem (other than "We'll go ahead and tear apart your 4Runner and throw a new transmission at it").
