 The VVT sensor has been changed from a pick-up type to a MRE (Magnetic Resistance Element) type.
 The oxygen sensor has been changed from a planar type to a cup type.
 The evaporative emission control system has been changed in order to comply with the LEV-II
evaporative emission regulations.


tkr128, Where did you find that information? The VVT sensor is the part that I am concerned about.
 
good find, and you have good reason to be concerned about the sensor difference.

Do you think you can replace with 2004 sensor? However, you take a risk that there may be other changes that aren't listed between the 2005 engine and 2004 ECU.

Can someone at Toyota help you here?

The local Toyota dealer said to hold out for an '04 motor. They started checking part numbers between the 2 years and it seemed that everything was different. I'm holding on that the cam position switch/sensor is the only important difference. I can replace them.... I just hope that I don't.
 
Update - Cam Position Sensor Swapped Out

Quick update.... I did confirm with Toyota that the cam position sensors were different between '04 and '05 and the signal sent to the computer would be a different wave. By searching for posts with issues on the CPS, I also found that if I didn't change out the sensors that the engine may start but it would always have a "Check Engine" light. It also sounds like the engine wouldn't run beyond idle either.

So I called the junk yard in Houston to get the CPS parts pulled off of my original motor. The parts arrived the next day so thanks to Express Auto Parts in Houston for continuing to help me through this fun job. I sat with the unopened box of parts for a week because I just didn't have the extra time. My full time 9 to 5 job was running until I went to bed at 11PM so it just didn't leave time for the 4Runner.

Last night I installed the '04 CPS. That's not a fun job. It's essentially the same as adjusting the valves. My recommendation... if your 4Runner needs to have the valves adjusted let someone else do it.

Swapping out the CPS requires that all 3 of the timing chains are removed. It also requires that the intake camshafts are pulled out. The job took about 6 hours. And remember, I only have the long block (without transmission) in the truck. I'd hate to think how much time would be charged to do the whole job.

The whole time I kept thinking, "Don't drop anything in the motor!"

I didn't drop anything and I finished the swap around midnight.

So now the standard reassembly begins!

Glad to hear you're still making progress with it. I was just wondering the other day how things were going with it.

The tranny difference was the only thing I could think of. Not sure why they would make changes like that sensor when the engine was only 2 years old at the time.

The tranny change is the thing preventing me from changing the ECU in order to upgrade the cruise control (so the speed stays in memory) but that is a whole other soapbox issue. Let us know how the '04 tranny bolts up to the '05 engine. If I ever blow the tranny (should never happen in a Toy) I'll upgrade to the 5 spd.

I'm taking a break from mounting the transmission right now but I've got all of the main bolts that mount the engine to the transmission installed. I haven't bolted the torque converter to the flexplate yet... but the flexplate is off of the original '04 motor (just because the '05 didn't come with the flexplate). The '04 flexplate mounted up fine with the '05 crank so I don't see any issues. The biggest problem that I have had is that the throughholes in the transmission bellhousing do seem to be slightly off but not enough to prevent mounting motor and transmission. The bolt through holes for the starter also seem to be slightly off so I'm going to install the bolts into position before going through and tightening down all of the bellhousing bolts.
 
Wow... I'd be REALLY surprised if they changed the bolt holes on the block, but it's possible that they very well may have changed the block slightly on the '05s to accomodate the new 5-speed transmission. That would suck royally!

No changes in bolt patter. A couple of the bolts were hard to get in.... I guess it's that way whenever rebolting a transmission.

I'm worn out. I wanted to get more done tonight but more to come tomorrow.

Completed:
1 - Install Valve Covers
2 - Install Exhaust Manifolds
3 - Bolt Transmission to Engine

I haven't hooked up the torque converter. I'm just too tired. Hopefully tomorrow I can finish all work underneath other than exhaust and driveshaft.
 
I've had that before where some bolts on the bellhousing have been difficult to start. Haven't done one on a 4Runner, but on the CRXs, I've had that before.

Thanks for the info. The sensor differences (among other things) you found explain why I can't just swap the ECU's. All the Toyota service and parts guys know is they are different part numbers but they don't know why.
Like others have said, you've got patience and a talent. You've seen and learned more than even some tech's.

Update for March 14

Today was a very productive day. I completed everything under the 4Runner that I could. I'm waiting on a $1.97 (with TX taxes) exhaust manifold stud. Seems that the engine (#4 for anyone keeping track) didn't come with one of the studs for the right/passenger side. I didn't notice the missing part until it was time to intstall the manifold and I was left with a thought running through my head like, "Hey, the other side had 6 studs. Why does this side only seem to have 5?"

So I ordered the $1.97 part yesterday at 1:30PM just before the 2PM cutoff for parts orders. When I called to check on the part, they said I didn't get the part in before the 2PM cutoff so the part will be in tomorrow. No use arguing with the parts guy so hopefully the part is in tomorrow so that I can finish installing the exhaust system and transmission crossmember.

Since I had finished everything on the underside that I could, I dropped the front wheels to the ground and began working in the engine compartment. AC and ALT now installed!

Completed Today:
1- Bolt Converter to Flexplate
2- Install Starter
3- Install Transmission Lines
4- Install A/C Compressor
5- Install Alternator
6- Install Wiring on Left/Driver's side to starter/AC/Alternator
 
Update for March 15

Very good day in the garage. I got the $1.97 exhaust stud so I was able to finish up all work on the bottom side of the truck.

Now that the truck is back on the ground I have been working on the engine. I installed the PS pump and the electrical harness.

I also wanted to prime the oil system (I have proof that engines need oil). I charged up the battery and ran a wire down to the starter so that I could crank the engine without using the key. I looked for oil in the engine top end by looking down the oil filler tube. When the oil begins streaming on the chain, then there is oil in the top end. About the time I got oil in the top end I started to hear some sort of 'gurgling' sound.

I checked under the truck for any leaking fluids but couldn't find any.

I went back to 'priming the oil system' which resulted in more 'gurgling'.

A couple more cycles of cranking/searching for leaks finally identified the source.... the transmission! I don't have the radiator in so the transmission lines are just sitting in the engine bay. Seems I have also primed my transmission because I had about 1 pint of fluid under the truck. :D

Completed Today:
1- Exhaust
2- Transmission Crossmember
3- Driveshaft
4- Transmission and Oil Dipstick Tubes
5- PS Pump
6- Engine Harness
7- Primed Engine Oil System
8- Primed Transmission
9- Cleaned up Transmission Fluid

The truck's almost ready to go. I just need to install the serpantine belt, intake, radiator, and CAM POSITION SENTORS.

I have lost the old CPS out of my old motor. I brought them back from the junkyard with motor #4 because I had a hunch that I would need them. Unfortunately I can't find them. They are the 1st parts that I have lost. I have had some on order but they haven't come in yet. If they don't come in tomorrow, I'm going to check the '05 sensors for interference and then I'll install the '05 CPS.

With any luck (fingers crossed) the truck will be running tomorrow.

Update for March 16

I got the '04 Cam Position Sensors. I had ordered them throught the DiscountToyotaParts website which uses the standard Toyota dealer online website but they actually have a "MSRP Price" which is the standard Toyota dealer online price and then they have a "Your Price" which is significantly lower. For example a Dealer wanted $70 to walk into the parts department and purchase. The MSRP is $48.53 and the "Your Price" is $36.40. Basically I was able to buy the parts (that I'd lost) for half the price of walking into the dealership.

So I installed the CPS, radiator, and intake. I installed the battery and topped off the radiator.

I'm actually a little worried. I turned the first bolts in this repair job on Jan 1. I wonder if I have forgotten something or maybe I did something wrong (during cam pull to fix the CPS).

I get in and turn on the ignition on so that the fuel lines can become pressurized.

9:55PM is the Moment of Truth.

I turn the key and she starts. She runs smoothly - and more importantly there is no "CHECK ENGINE" light!

I just had to take a picture of the instrument cluster with no idiot lights (well the door was open...).

A quick check under the vehicle prooved no gushing leaks. The engine is quiet so no exhaust leaks (no knocking either :D )

After a couple minutes though I did get a water leak. It turns out that the leak is coming from where the thermostat housing bolts to the water pump. There is an o-ring behind there and I bet that's the leak. I guess the consolation prize is that the leak isn't from anythng that I installed. The housing came installed on the motor when I picked it up. Bad news though, I got a leaky truck. :(

So tomorrow it's off to the dealership to pick up some o-rings! So close yet still in the garage.

Picture below shows where the leak is (red circle).

I just noticed when looking at the post in the previous thread shows the OIL STAIN from when my wife drive the 4Runner with it thowing oil everywhere. :bugeye:

damn dood, you are definitely hardcore... I've been watching this thread from the get-go and its nice to see that you are rounding the last corner into the final straight. Good job!
 
Yeah, that's just awesome! Good to hear it runs good so far... At least that's an easy fix! If that's all that is wrong, you've done well!

Update for March 17 - St. Patricks Day!

Well I guessed the source of the leak correctly. I pulled off the thermostat housing and I found that the o-ring was COMPLETELY MISSING. There is also another o-ring missing from the heater jacket line (the hard tube running under intake). The second o-ring had been replaced with gray silicone.:confused:

I called all of the Toyota dealers here in Austin area and I did find the o-ring for the heater tube. The water pump to thermostat housing o-ring is part of the water pump gasket kit. Noone had that so I spent the rest of the day at all of the auto part stores and hardware stores. I found one with the right ID (44mm) but it was too thick so it doesn't fit.

I called back to the junkyard where I got the motor to have a o-ring shipped to me. I couldn't figure out why someone would replace the housing but not install the o-rings. The owner, Jeff explained that my current #4 motor came without the housing so one of the 'mechanics' pulled the housing off of another motor. I asked him if there were any other parts that were swapped out and he said that the housing was the only thing. So hopefully no more suprises.

I guess when you work at a junkyard as a 'mechanic' you are better at pulling things apart than reinstalling them.

So no work on 4Runner until the o-ring arrives on Tuesday. Soooo close.
