Has anyone removed KDSS completely?

Hey mr Maximus I would advise against this.it will produce codes and will probably not be any fun to drive.my suggestion would be go to your dealer ask to ride with a master tech or diagnostic specialist do not quit until they hear the noise.this should get the ball rolling in right direction.remember to be nice but not a pushover, have a chat with the service manager if you have to.if there is a mechanical problem they will repair it.is your noise happening on all bumps or just turning left into a dip.mine is only Turing left into a pretty big dip at 5 or 10 mph so it doesn't bother me too much, but then again I deal with this stuff every day.hope this helps and good luck.

Great, thanks for that info! The reason I say that is I am about to travel 6 hrs+ to get one as there are none around me. Where can I find the build date of the 4Runner? Is it on the window sticker? I will be sure to ask before I go and test drive and drive 250+ miles just to see it.

Actually it appears there are SOME problems with KDSS scott. There are three different KDSS systems that have been used, with the first system not related to this problem.

Read post #51 in this link: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/160261-14-te-guys-weird-noise-4.html

We know that virtually no one from the first build dates of 2010 through 7/2013 has noise issues in their KDSS system. For example I have a 6/13 build date and my KDSS is silent, and others have reported the same thing. The second group with build dates from 8/13 until 1/14 are reporting noise coming from their KDSS. The big question is if those with build dates after 2/14 will have this issue.

In other words there's a distinct possibility the problem is already confined to current owners or remaining stock with build dates from 8/13 to 2/14. The question is did they resolve the noise, and it's hard to see why they would change parts so soon in the new design run for any other reason.

Hopefully we'll get reports back from forum members with build dates of 2/14 and after.

The build date is on a plate right inside the driver's door. Call the dealer you're working with and they'll give it to you. If you want to be extra safe get the VIN and call Toyota directly to match the VIN with a build date.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the help. I feel better now that I at least have a chance to avoid potential problems! :)

Build date 2/14

I have the KDSS rattle. Really its not bad at all. I notice it 2% of the time when I'm driving the truck. The other 98% of time I'm happy to have the system.

One of the problems with KDSS is that it is super expensive to do any work on. Just bleeding the system is $500-$600 and requires special tools. If one of those cylinders goes bad it you are looking at about $1100 for Toyota or Lexus to replace and bleed the system. The other problem is that there aren't many techs or service departments out there with that have much experience with it, so you have to worry about them troubleshooting or fixing a problem correctly. If you are out of warranty, hopefully they will do it right the first time!

For those experiencing the noise, but just writing it off as a minor annoyance...I would be making 100% sure that it is normal and won't cause accelerated ware, or any problems down the road (out of warranty) or you will be in for some big bills.

My 2014 TE has a build date of 1/14 and I have never heard any noise from the KDSS system before or after the lift and bigger tires. Took it off roading stock and felt nice and tight and smooth and even more solid now. Only noise I hear with the lift is the bushings on the Total Chaos a-arms squeeking sometimes, and they did that on my FJC too so not really a problem for me.

If someone were to remove their KDSS it seems they would still be able to add a regular sway bar if they didn't want to lose the sway bars altogether and keep a better on road ride.

you wouldnt be able to return to a normal sway bar without lower control arms. and it attaches to the rear axle differently also

It will eventually (in 5-10 years) be very common to remove it. For the reasons stated above, it is just too expensive and problematic to maintain on an old truck. Black box one off systems like that usually get stripped as a capable vehicle ages. These 4runners seems to stick around for 25+ years. so I can see there eventually being reasonably priced aftermarket KDSS delete kits.

I would just live with the rattle for the time being myself. They will probably find a solution in a few months. I do understand though, you get obsessed when you drop major $s and get a noise you have to live with. Most people won't even hear it, but in your mind it roars.

Very well said wfo. Do yourself a favor and DON'T remove the KDSS. It makes no sense to take a double hit. First you pay good money (or take your own time and trouble) to remove something, then the absence also costs in terms of resale value. At the least let's give this a little time and see how everything plays out.

With all due respect to to some of the well meaning comments in this thread, this issue is new and therefore not actually related to other Toyota things going on for years. Moreover it appears few if even any members with '10 to '13 rigs have the issue mentioned by '14 owners. It's also very possible the recent build change to a different part number could have solved the problem already.

It would be a shame to see someone tear out their KDSS, only to find a fix being offered a few months down the line.

I've been debating removing the KDSS and installing an LT kit when it breaks.

Was wondering how much crap I have to gut from the truck and how much crap I need to replace.

If you are just removing the swaybars for good it should be easy and cheap to eliminate KDSS. You might even be able to leave the pistons in place.

However, you won't be able to run any sway bars at all. But if you are going LT up front... those kits don't currently support sway-bars anyway. The lack of an LT compatible front swaybar is the only thing that has stopped me from going LT up front. I still might eventually do it, but having a quick disconnect setup like I'm running now is pretty much ideal for my needs. If it breaks again.... (I'm on my 3rd rev) I'll just suck it up and go full LT...

Can someone explain what component they think is rattling? I have a hard time envisioning a rattle source in KDSS. Every hard part is mounted with a rubber bushing to every other hard part. When I read through the other thread all I hear is "it rattles - must be KDSS". There' a billion other sources. My last one was from my remote reservoir rattling. Squeeks seem probable as well. What is it that you think is loose? It's not magic. It's no more likely to rattle than your brakes.

It surely has limitations. I've never noticed a rattle in my '15 KDSS. And I beat the shit out of it sometimes.
