Really just a mall cruiser. She's more interested in stuff you would find on a luxury SUV like an XC90, like blind spot monitoring, big nav screen, A/C seats. But I think I've convinced her on the 4runner for more practical reasons.

As everyone else already said, it sounds like a 4R isn't for her. Recommend her an RX, GX, XC90 (or XC60 if the 90 is too expensive), or maybe even a Highlander. Even the Mazda CX SUVs would be a good choice.

Although I will agree that out of all the SUVs out there, the 4R has the best overall looks

Around here you're at $47,500 MSRP just by adding auto running boards and floor/cargo all weather mats + 10% tax. Assuming you're awesome and got it for 10% off MSRP you're still paying $47,500 + dealer fees and whatever warranty/protection packages you let the finance guy/gal talk you into (don't).

So in my area I'd say 50K is a good budget to shop for a nice limited.

As for needing add-on options at the dealer only and not aftermarket, that I get too. There's a lot of dealer haters here but the fact is rolling mods into the vehicle loan can be the best option when there are not large chunks of cash laying around to dump into a truck you just put a huge down payment on, even if you are paying excessive amounts it pencils out better over time.

I did that for some of my stuff, and I also got a 3 year warranty on everything they added as a result.

This is a situation where anything less than $50k will go to Uncle Sam. So might as well spend it because you're not 'saving' the unused portion. Odd, I get it.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys. I'll ask her to reconsider and/or test drive the GX460 because I agree it sounds like a great option. And I agree with whoever said Volvo is killing the interior design game. That XC90 cockpit feels incredible.

A dealer in my area does custom work through Dealer Sercices International. Lifted Trucks by DSI

They do some good work through local install shops. The Revtex 3" lift, Fuel wheels, and Toyo tires package runs about $5000. I've seen many 4R around here with those packages and they look nice. Interestingly, this particular dealership only sells 2WD 4Runners. Seems silly to lift a 2WD but they look cool and most people don't drive off road anyway.

I would test drive the heck out of SUVs and crossovers. Heck that can be half the fun. Make a list and put each in ascending order. It would be helpful to know what she is driving today. [I missed "She's trading in a 2012 JGC"] For all that she has been thru, she really deserves to get the perfect fit. Very cool that you are helping her.

I went from a 3rd generation 4Runner to 5th and the 5th seems big especially off road. i'll get used to it. Really waiting on the 2021 Bronco Raptor.

At least one of the dealers around here always has a truck or two in the showroom that they've done aftermarket mods to. Things like most people have mentioned; spacer lift, tires, wheels, light bars. Seen at least one 4R with rigid front grill.

You got a limited with 3rd row fully optioned out (factory cross bars, all weather mats, remote start, automatic running boards, exhaust tip) for 43,5? Hell of a deal there. Maybe no third row? Guess that'd be her preference. As far as things to add...most people have hinted, there's not a lot of fancy creature comforts available. You could pay to have [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION] fly down and put the fancy folding mirrors on through the dealership?

Gah. As much love as I have for Volvo's I have to digress here.

First off, who wants the modifications, you or her? I understand you are trying to "help" but if all she wants is a dependable, comfortable vehicle then she doesn't need anything aftermarket. I'll echo what others have said that a Lexus GX460 may be good choice.

If your lady friend has 50K available from her pops, get her into the vehicle she likes (in the case a 4Runner) and have her invest the rest.. she'll get a much better return in the long run.
