I've read some mixed reports about people who have had issues with 31M batteries, they seem limited but I figured I would do a poll.

Follow-up questions:

If your battery died prematurely - were you doing occasional maintenance charging?

If your fender cracked - did you improve the mounting tray and tie-down for the larger battery?

Is anyone running other sizes of deep cycle batteries?

Fender cracked but repaired. Have the battery on a charger at least once a month so it can fully recharge.

I run 2x Odyssey pc1200 batteries.
 
Didn't know of any issues...had a group 31 in the first 5th gen for 5 years and 120k....this one's been in the 2016 for about 15 months....20k. No issues I know of, but guess I better go check.

As far as power, first truck had a dual battery setup....never an issue. This one has single, and solar on the rack, no issues. Run a medium size Dometic about 8 months out of the year...24/7. I opted to carry a jump pack this time around.

The insulation on the battery cable rubbed through on my Pelfreybuilt battery tray. Battery shorted, it will no longer hold a charge.

Group 35

I've been running the Sears DieHard Group 35 in my '99 3rd Gen T4R since the OEM battery died. Had several of them kick the bucket before the warranty ran out, had one of them actually crack on the top. Sears replaced them every time, for very little to no charge. Only had one of them ever make it past the 4 years. But they never left me stranded, I could always sense and issue and took it in right away and they took care of me with a replacement everytime.

Then I installed a dual battery system in my 5th Gen 2011 TE about 3-4 years ago. Same battery Diehard Platinum G35, along with the OEM Panasonic. Zero issues, has preformed like a champ. It isn't my primary battery, but it always is fully charged when I pop the hood and check it.

As a matter of fact, I think the OEM battery is about due for replacement (yes, I'm still running it!)

The plan was to drop a 31M in the OEM location, but sears seems to have messed that up, but discontinuing them. I knew the Kmart purchase would doom that company somehow. First the tools got cheap, then the batteries...

So now I'm not sure which battery to get. Sears appears to be having a 15% off sale right now........
 
I had a Sears Diehard 31M. The top of the case cracked around both of the poles and was leaking slightly, it still held charge but at 23 months was only at 70%. I took it to Sears and after 3 f'kn hours for them to pull heads out of as they thankfully gave me a full refund.

I bought an Odyssey 31M-pc2150 have had it 7 months, maintenance charge once a month or on if I don't drive for the week (I don't drive much)

Yeah, been like that for while now. For my other truck I went with a Costco battery because I could not find a Diehard.

The X2 i posted is made by northstar for batteries plus, but its $140 more than the duracel (made by east penn). Not sure if its worth the extra price or not.

The Odyssey is more expensive than both from anyone local, although online its about the same price as the X2

I totally would have bought the Northstar from reviews they are sweet batteries, I would have gambled on one but they were six weeks out! I obviously had to go to Sears with a replacement in hand, I wanted to get that diedhard battery back before 24 months.

i guess it doesn't matter, i wouldn't want to buy anything that i wanted more than a 24-hr warranty from sears these days anyways

unless i can find a cheaper local odyssey dealer I'm comparing these two batteries:

Duracell Ultra 31M - $230 after rebate
(East Penn battery)

Cold Cranking Amps: 800
Capacity 20hr: 105AH
Cranking Amps: 1000

and X2Power Marine 31M - $ 350 after rebate
(Northstar battery)

Cold Cranking Amps: 1150
Capacity 20hr: 100AH
