It's been a long week, so sorry for the slow contribution:

 • Pelfrybuilt cage: I've used a cage from the moment I installed my Group 31M. I ran a regular battery tray only for the period it took to get the cage designed and produced by Pelfrybuilt.
 • I have no fender cracking: No real comment here. My fender is fine so far.
 • Cracked Diehard Platinum: The top cover of the cage was tightened down to much by a shop that worked on my truck and I think that contributed to the battery cracking around the terminals. That resulted in the battery not holding a charge.
 • Alternator: The stock alternators are sufficient for the truck electrical demands, until you start adding to the OEM systems. I'm pretty sure I wasnt fully charging the diehard battery before it broke. I have since upgraded to a 270 Amp high output alternator and that means that I can run all my goodies at the same time and still have power to spare. It also means have no concerns about charging my dual battery system (D35 being added shortly).
 • Currently running a Northstar Group 31M.

Okki

although if you want that sweet overlanding credibility i guess you definitely need the pelfreybilt one

and sooooo sweet it is!.. if I ever get some spare time back, I'm working on a cage design for Tyler (Pelfreybuilt) to fabricate for the passenger side :tea:

With that stuff said, do you think I would benefit from having a Pelfreybilt instead of the $10 version? I know I'm asking you to speculate, but I guess you could say I'm not quite understanding what is causing the fender to crack. I suppose if yours hasn't cracked and you have the Pelfreybilt, that might be enough to convince me to buy one short of some others coming out and saying they have the $10 version with same results.

The Pelfreybilt cage was the best purchase I made on a whim. Even with an upgraded steel battery tray my group 31 would constantly torque around while Offroad. We installed the pelfrey plate and it absolutely just can't go anywhere.

Awesome, thank you for this.

When using just a regular tie-down, mine could twist / torque under the single strap. While the cage is held in place with j-hooks, the bottom of the cage is held secure and can't torque. The top plate secures the battery inside of the cage. Just make sure you don't tighten the top plate down to hard and stress-crack the battery housing.

Yes, it's 10 times the price, yes it's 10 times the piece of mind.

That's just my 2 cents.

I think I'm going to go with the Duracell Ultra 31 and use the cost difference to get a good jump pack. Its made by East Penn (deka) which has plenty of good reviews.

I contacted East Penn about chargers, the NOCO multi-prupose chargers were all too high voltage. this battery has a Charge/Absorption/Equalize of 13.8V-14.6V, the NOCO is 14.8V.

East Penn recommended Clore Automotive chargers, so I contacted them, they don't list the voltage in their manuals. I really liked that the NOCO was waterproof but I'll see what I can find.

EDIT:
The NOCO GenMini1 on-board charger should work

Did you end up going with the Duracell 31M? Any reviews?

Yeah, it's great. Northstar and Odyssey are definitely the top tier, and if I travelled frequently in extreme remote areas I would probably spend the extra money, but East Penn manufactured batteries are a small step from Northstar/Odyssey for half the price. I like that it's American made, I like that I can get their customer support, I like that I bought through a national chain so if I ever have an issue it's easy to resolve and so far everything has worked great. And the small on board charger works great for keeping it topped off when I'm parked long term or just topping off the battery overnight on weeks when I'm not driving g much.
