head gasket blown estimate, is this right??

I was just told my 96 toyota 4 runner needs a head gasket repair. They did a type of water test in a tube, and the liquid went from blue to green, indicating that is the problem (a blown head gasket). I got an estimate of $2500-3000 to fix.

Is this the right test, and result? And what is the normal average cost of this repair?

I suggest you find an independent repair shop that specializes*** in Toyotas.

Im doing my headgasket repair as we speak:

Head rebuild, decked and new valve seals: $465

OEM MLS head gaskets yr2000: $70 (discount from a buddy at toyota)

OEM water pump/gasket: $95 (discount from a buddy at toyota)

OEM upper intake manifold gasket set: $100

Cam seals: $10

I still need: OEM headbolts, timing belt and tensioner , some header bolts and exhaust gaskets

Labor?: ME FO FREE

yes you should go to "the truck shop" located in Miramar.

They fixed my head gasket issues but each failure is unique.

Truck shop is the only independent all toyota shop that I know of in San Diego. James is the owner. He is there every day M-Sat. These guys only use OEM parts (by default) and charge $85/hr. They are very knowlegable.
