Head gasket in 1991 4runner

Hey i lost the head gasket in my 91 3.0. My mechanic said that in his experience the head bolts take the thread with them, and i would be better off swapping motors. anyone pull the heads of one of these and how did it go?

Thats not common at all. Shoot, Ive even re used headbolts before! Change the headgaskets and keep on truckin. :thumb3:

Your mechanic is full of it and I think you need to find a new mechanic or do the job yourself.

It is not unheard of for the head bolts to break but it is rare.

Thanks that is good to hear. I will do the gaskets myself. My mechanic friend towed it for me and checked for exhaust gas in the antifreeze to confirm the blown gasket only got 150k on it thanks again
