Head Unit Advice

Hi,

I am planning to replace my wifes headunit in her 05 sport. I would like something that can play music from a droid or iphone maybe via Bluetooth. I want the installation to look clean so I guess the headunit has to be of similar size. Do you all have any recommendations?

Looks like I have the JBL with RDS, is this a 2-DIN system and does it have to be replaced with a 2-DIN system or can I go 1-DIN?

Will I need an amp if the stock system is removed, I am not looking for huge music just better than stock with blue tooth for iPhones or droids. Looks like Pioneer, Kenwood or JBL has good systems but limited 2-DIN options if that is what is needed.

It can be replaced by a single or double din. The single din with require an adapter that will leave a pocket under the head unit. As for units, I have always enjoyed pioneer. But many companies are comparable so hopefully someone else will chime in

Just went out to an auto audio dealer and was very surprised of the cost of the connectors. He said I was $370 in before the cost of a radio. One connector was $140 specific to a Toyota and JBL, one for steering wheel controls then $85 to install. This seems crazy.

Just talked to crutchfield and the cost comes way down. I am pretty handy and don't doubt I can do this but how much is done under the dash and behind the dash, I am 6'8" and getting in those tight spot6s is a challenge sometimes.

in your case I suggest just ordering ALL the parts, connectors and head unit from crutfield

then calling around and looking up online for a decent install shop. They will be happy to charge you 2 hours labor to do the install and you can vet them and their rates.

Going through Crutchfield is always a great idea for inexperienced installers. They give you the harnesses you need, the install kit, and install sheets for your specific vehicle. If you are mechanically inclined, have some tools, or don't mind investing in some basic tools, and want to learn more about your 4Runner, I would definitely suggest installing it yourself!
You will feel so much more satisfaction from it knowing you did it yourself. But watch out - it may even start the mod bug!

One option to consider in your Runner with JBL, is simply removing the JBL components. If you are replacing the headunit, you might as well replace the speakers as well. No JBL adapter needed anymore. And you'll probably get better sound too.

That's what I did anyway. I played around with the OEM navs for a couple years, then went all aftermarket. And never looked back at reinstalling JBL!

Thanks, I am pretty much mechanically inclined but don't do well with tiny stuff did my own lift, bumper etc. I have the part and will be doing the install myself. Looks like a two six pack job. Looking up ways to run the wires for the Bluetooth mic now, thinking to put it near the rearview mirror
