headers 2003 4runner in California 1GRFE

Ok, I searched a little on the threads to find out about headers. I have been mulling back and forth. Ok here is the skinny,

I have that rotten egg smell when my t4r V6 is open throttle or going up hill. I know the cats right? I tried CataClean...kind of worked, so I got the AFE CAI, TB Spacer and Jet reprogrammed MAF. Kinda lessened the stank.

I want new cats, but only ones I could find are flowmaster. Was thinking of pairing with the magnaflow exhaust, but may go flowmaster also. Keep it all the same. But would like to add headers and get rid of the manifold. then the jet computer chip.

question is...since I am in the land of freedom(to overly regulate our vehicles!) of So Cal, Do I have to have 3 cats on? Re weld the new cats to the headers?

Also should I go long tube? or shorty? I'm kind of lost and feel like I have been spinning circles.

the t4r seems a little sluggish, I don't expect a race car, but noticed today when I had a full truck, Sister, brother in law and two kids, it seemed sluggish. By myself, not bad but can always use more.

As far as labor is concerned, not an issue, I have a buddy who can do it all legitimately.

not too many people have headers on the 1gr, tacoma guys seem to do it more. that said, emelianenkov had long tubes, maybe he will come back from fj land and give you a review

ok, thanks, I need to rid myself of that egg smell. Main purpose. So any opinions will help

00dank,

If removing the sulfur smell is your "Main purpose", just do what most 4.0 owners, here on T4R.org have done: Simply have a muffler shop "turn" your tail pipe to point out the right side of the vehicle. Yes, you will still have the smell emit from the pipe, but it WILL NOT back-up into the vehicle when driving with the rear window down (which is when, I am assuming, that you are getting a blast of that smell).

The only way to really get rid of the stink is to have a shop make the pipe dump out the side so it's not drawn in when the rear window is open. 3rd Gens were like this and I don't know why Toyota went straight out the back on the 4th, especially with the trademark opening tailgate glass.

I have the DTLT and with this you will loose a pair of cats. There are two more that are on the mid/Y-Pipe section. As far as Cali spec exhaust goes, I'm not sure if there are anymore downstream on that setup. I would have to assume with a set of LT's any CARB inspector would spot out LT's and fail (possibly fine?) you.

If I were you, I would go with a pair of shorties paired with a set of CARB approved high flow cats that are then welded to the end piece on the OEM section.

Headers won't add huge power, but do help. I definitely gained an improvement in response and driveability that I outlined in my writeup (see my sig).

i'm thinking of doing the titanium headers with two FlowMaster cats to dual exhaust, possibly MagnaFlow but leaning towards Borla. The duals to me always sound cooler and I enjoy the symmetry of duals.

this would be a full custom set up. but I have to get under the 2003 T4R Sport V6 and see what room I have to work with. All equipment would be CARB legal. Just curious. Maybe if I talk to MagnaFlow or FlowMaster they can shed some light on it. I just met an engineer for MagnaFlow so will see if he has any input.

I am a New guy here....Had my 03 runner for 4 years. I have the V8 and have the exhaust leak from the manifolds. I posted on here about a few companies that make replacement manifolds and the cat is built right in...of course not performance like a header. Has anyone ever used the DEC or Bosal replacements? I found them on Parts geek
