I just saw a post in the Off-Roading section about headers for the 4th Gens. I was wondering if anybody makes headers for 3rd Gens. Are they worth the extra HP they make? How much HP can be expected? How much does a shop charge to install them?

If you were SC'd they will help things flow well and produce a bit of useable HP but on a naturally aspirated 3rd gen V6 the cost vs gains (4-7whp in the midrange) just isn't worth it plus the install is a hassle and can be expensive too.

you would probably see that much out of the headers if you upgraded cams, and maybe did a little head porting. basically if they aren't making power and they are a good design (i haven't looked at them), then they aren't the biggest restriction in the engine yet.

But cams and porting on a 4Runner is a bit silly unless it's being built for the track.

that really depends who you are, and what you have the ability to do yourself or have done cheaply but yes the best route for the average person who wants to see a good power increase would probably be a supercharger and some engine management to tune it properly.

de-installing the stock headers and installing the aftermarket headers will be difficult for a weekend wrencher plus, the hp will not be noticeable. don't know what your installation prices are in your area but here in hawaii, installation for the headers ranged from $300 to $1100, depending if it was a friend mechanic or a dealership/service shop doing the installation. would recommend a supercharger for noticeable power... best bang for the buck. Plus, a person with avg mechanical skills and tools should be able to install a SC in 3-5 hours.
