Heading North

Hi All,

I am planning on taking a road trip up the coast of California in April. It will be the kids first multi-day road trip and i plan on taking my time, and camping each night. I don't know the area well, but was hoping some of you could help me out with planning as i want to get in some trails on the way up as well. I plan to spend 3 to 5 hours heading north each day before getting off the road and finding a remote (if possible) spot to camp. I have listed my initial itenerary below and would love some feedback/local knowledge of trails and camping locations to run along the coast.

Day 1 - San Diego to Pismo Beach
Camping: Oceano Dunes SVRA - I think the boys would really dig camping on the beach and its something I've always wanted to do, but haven't got around to yet.

Day 2 - Pismo Beach to Big Sur
Camping: ??
Hoping to find a fun easy trail that has a yellow post or similar camping available. I saw on another thread Pruitt Ridge might be a good choice. but it does not look like its accessible from the coast (the 1). Is there something else that starts off the 1 i should look into?

Day 3 - Big Sur to Salt Point State Park??
Camping: Salt Point State Park
Not sure if there is a better spot nearby. Anyone have a better option?
Also not looking like there are many trails nearby. Recommendations?

Day 4 - Salt Point State Park?? to Redwood National Park
Camping: I see there are a few options. Which is best for tying to be as isolated and surrounded by the forest as possible?

Day 5 - Redwood National Park to Portland, OR

Sorry for the long post, but thanks in advance for your feedback!

Good luck getting into Big Sur. Town is isolated due to road closures. Best to check with CalTrans for which roads are open

I'm planning on something similar in April but from the Bay Area to Jedediah Smith Redwoods and onward to Oregon. No specific plans yet, still in planning stages.

Thats where i am. I know when we will be going, but havent narrowed down the details yet. Based on damage to the 1, it looks like we will be skipping Big Sur, and going all the way to San Fran on the second day.

i was trying to see if there is any BLM land or something similar that allows dispersed camping in the redwoods, but havent found anything yet.
