Headlight Bulb Opinions

I got the XD5 9005 and 9006... they seems a bit "blue"... not as bright white as I expected.

When I tested drive it, I feel that I am driving without the headlights (of course it is on). Sorry I never have experience with this kinda bulbs before. Is that suppose to be like this?

In fact, I feel more "safe" if I could see my lightbeam pattern, however, I don't like the stock yellow beam.

Would that be the aiming issue? Any other suggestion?

Thats just kind of how they are and I felt better after a week of driving around with them I later got the fog lights and man, that made a huge diference in seeing. Not an aming issue though, these beams are hard to see. Give it a while.

I've had XD5 9005 and 9006's in this 4Runner since January and they are fine for me...very bright, white, and I have no problems seeing at night. Plus when my high beams are on ALL the lights are on (lows, highs, fogs) so there is more than enough of light.

I trusted your judgement and in fact, that's why I bought the XD5... maybe, just my own problem... (getting older and sight is weaker... )

I don't know if any effect with the JDM smoked headlight on my car... OR maybe because I never have that experience with these kinda bulb...

Do you think those 4000~4300k, like PIAA or SILVERSTAR.... would give a white beam pattern that I can see?

Well....I would also recommend going with SPP bulbs. I went with the 80W yellow ones for the fogs and they are freakin great. They actually produce less heat than the stock bulbs (according to the good old hand test that is!). Needless to say, I havent had any problems with the harnesses frying, and when the headlights are on, so are the fogs.

I just got in the mail today the SPP 80W Super White bulbs to put in instead of the Silverstars. One of the Silverstars finally crapped itself after 16 months. Since the 80W didnt hurt the fog light housing or wiring harness, I dont expect any problems with the headlight harnesses either. I will let you know what they look like tomorrow.

luckily, there is hardly ever any fog here so I just use the lights as driving lights instead of yellow fog lights

sorry to hear you didnt like the XD5's, but hey...I'm not sure why those dont produce a patter that you like....at least they are a cheap "try"

9006 55w for lowbeam & foglight

9005 65w for highbeam

Parking light... use 168 bulb

park it up to a wall.. about 5 feet from it and look at the pattern it produces. It'll most likely be those bulbs as alignment i'm sure hasn't changed.

problems with those bulbs is that they... "look white... but shine yellow". what good is it if you can't see the road?

good luck! IMO, sylvania silverstar are still the best bet... and i'm not just saying that.. i've tried lots of aftermarket bulbs.

my xd5s look white, shine white, and light up the road in front of me....maybe i just got the only "good" pair.... I have no problems with brightness, vision, aiming, pattern or anything else with my cheap xd5s

HRunner - I'm sure you realize that the JDMs were designed for the streets of Japan where they drive on the other side of the road. Therefore the light pattern is probably different. Might be worth it to have them professionally adjusted.
Of course, you may have already thought of this.

Check out supremepowerparts.com. Their own SPP 80Watt Super White bulbs are so much better than silverstars and look the same as an S2000 headlights (About the same output too). I havent had any problems running the higher wattage with with the stock harness. Trust me, the best $30 I ever spent on a truck!

Okay, someone needs to help me understand. I am thinking about upgrading my LBs and fogs and found this thread.
You guys are talking about using "high wattage" bulbs or 80w bulbs.
Since LBs and fogs are 55w and HBs are 65w aren't you going to blind on-coming drivers using these "high wattage" bulbs or 80w bulbs.
Granted the added light is very desireable, but this sounds dangerous to me. Plus wiring harnesses and lenses that are only built to handle 55w or 65w.

I'm using Silverstars for my low beams and XD5's for the fogs. Originally I said I was going to do a side by side comparison but right around that time my digital camera got submerged in water and stopped working (sorry about that). I just got a new one about a month ago so maybe I'll still do that comparison. My avatar was taken before I upgraded the bulbs so those are still the factory ones.

From my point of view though, I really can't tell a difference between the XD5's and Silverstars, they look identical. XD5's are a way cheaper too (if you don't mind waiting the 2-3 days for shipping). They're both very bright and very white. As far as which one lasts longer, I don't know that yet.

I have off this Tuesday so maybe I'll take a few minutes and swap one of the fog and low beam bulbs so everyone can finally see if there is a difference.

I first replacement bulbs I bought for my LB's were PIAA superwhites (55w=106w) and they began to burn my reflectors. After keeping them in there for about a week and kept noticing they were getting worse, I replaced them with Sylvania Superstars, which look decent and are relatively cheap.

I was wondering if anyone knows if I can put the PIAA's in my fog light housings without burning them too.

Actually I don't get much problem driving with XD5... I like it, really.... (fair enough with that price ) It is just my wife not comfortable when she drove....

Therefore, I ended up with 2 options....

(A) Don't let my wife to drive my beloved 4Runner, but then I will die for sure....

(B) Replace by Silverstar.... to comfort my wife~

Best headlight bulbs

I know some have used the Sylvania Silverstars and had decent luck with them, but I've checked forums other than this one and have found that these bulbs are overwhelmingly loved (for a short time), then criticized because they don't last. Based on my personal experience and a vast majority of opinions by others, I think the PIAA bulbs are the best for the money. I use PIAA Xtreme White Plus bulbs and they have lasted 1.5 years so far with no problems. They are bright and are whiter than the stock bulbs. Aside from HID of course, it's the best alternative to stock halogen bulbs.
