Headlight Delay?

Does anyone know how long your headlights stay on after you turn your truck off if you don't open the driver door?

I recently installed my remote start and if I leave my headlights on and remote start the truck they wont turn off it I turn the truck off with the remote start unless I open the drive door, they just stay on....

Have yet to try to time the delay. Curious if anyone knew or knows a way around it?

I have a 2000 Limited.

That's normal. If you forget to turn your lights off, when you finally open your door they will automatically shut off as a fail-safe.

No I get that, I want to know if I DONT open my door how long will they take to turn off or will it just drain my battery all night? Cause sometimes ill remote start my truck thinking im going somewhere, then decide not to go but have to walk outside and open my driver door for the lights to turn off.

Why don't you remote start it and shut it off. make sure your lights are still on..wait 10 minutes. If your lights are still on after that I would say it's safe to assume they aint cutn off till your battery dies.

Okay, well im asking is there a fix for this?

There is no delay. They stay on until your battery dies. You have to open the drivers side door.

Coming from someone who has had remote start in his 4Runner for over 2 years and has started the 4Runner without opening the door afterwards, I have had many a dead battery from being careless.

So either don't leave your lights on or open your door.

what he said. and i know from experience unfortunately.

Thanks guys, thats all I need to know. :) Maybe I can wire some sort of pulse to my AUX button for window roll downs to make it trigger that I opened the door... Otherwise just learning to keep the headlights turned off should be easy enough once I get a dead battery or two haha.

I will have to double check but I think mine turn of with the key even when they are in the on position now that I disabled the day time running lights I will check and let you know in about an hour.

headlights time delay

What a great time for this post to come up. I just finished installing a remote starter and have the same problem. I talked to the remote starter manufacturer and they had no solution. I looked up the programable options and found that you can get the dealer to set the time delay to 0 so hopefully when the remote starter times out and the engine shuts down, the lights will turn off. If not I can always go back to manual headlights if I only remember to turn them on, it's been along time since I had to do that.

We'll see.

I was wrong mine dose the same thing I am working on a possible fix for this I will keep you posted.

well i figured out how to make it so you can only turn the lights off with the door switch:rant: there are just to many relays if I had all the wiring diagrams I might be able to figure it out

HEADLIGHT (w/ DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT)
1. DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT OPERATION
When the engine is started, voltage generated at TERMINAL L of the generator is applied to TERMINAL 11 of the daytime
running light relay (Main).
If the parking brake lever is pulled up (Parking brake SW on) at this time, the relay is not activated so the daytime running
light system does not operate. If the parking brake lever is then released (Parking brake SW off), a signal is input to
TERMINAL 8 of the relay. This activates the relay, so current flows from battery to the HEAD relay (Point side) to TERMINAL
4 of the DIMMER relay to TERMINAL 1 to HEAD (LO LH), (LO RH) fuse to TERMINAL 1 of the headlights to TERMINAL 3 to
TERMINAL 1 of the daytime running light resistor to TERMINAL 2 to GROUND. This causes the headlights to light up (The
headlights light up dimmer than full brightness.).
Once the daytime running light system operates and headlights light up, headlights remain on even if the parking brake lever
is pulled up (Parking brake SW on).
If the engine stalls and the ignition SW remains on, headlights remain lighted up even though current is no longer output
from TERMINAL L of the generator. If the ignition SW is then turned off, the headlights go off. If the engine is started with the
parking brake lever released (Parking brake SW off), the daytime running light system operates and the headlights light up
when the engine starts.
2. HEADLIGHT OPERATION
When the light control SW is switched to HEAD position, current flows from the DRL fuse to TERMINAL 4 of the daytime
running light relay no. 4 to TERMINAL 3 to TERMINAL 1 of the diode (Daytime running light no. 1) to TERMINAL 2 to
TERMINAL (E) 5 of the combination meter to TERMINAL (E) 1 to TERMINAL 13 of the light control SW to TERMINAL 16 to
GROUND, activating the daytime running light relay no. 4. Current then flows from the HEAD (LO LH), (LO RH) fuse to
TERMINAL 1 of the headlights to TERMINAL 3 to TERMINAL 2 of the daytime running light relay no. 4 to TERMINAL 1 to
GROUND, causing the headlights to light up at normal intensity.
When the dimmer SW is switched to the HIGH position, the signal from the dimmer SW is input to the daytime running light
relay (Main). This activates the relay and current flows from TERMINAL 4 of the DIMMER relay to TERMINAL 2 to
TERMINAL 17 of the daytime running light relay (Main), activating the DIMMER relay.
This causes current to flow from TERMINAL 4 of the DIMMER relay to TERMINAL 3 to HEAD (HI LH), (HI RH) fuse to
TERMINAL 2 of the headlights to TERMINAL 3 to TERMINAL 2 of the daytime running light relay no. 4 to TERMINAL 1 to
GROUND, causing the headlights to light up at high beam.
When the dimmer SW is switched to FLASH position, the daytime running light relay (Main) is activated and current flows
from TERMINAL 4 of the DIMMER relay to TERMINAL 3. Current from the DRL fuse flows to TERMINAL 4 of the daytime
running light relay no. 4 to TERMINAL 3 to TERMINAL 1 of the diode (Daytime running light no. 1) to TERMINAL 2 to
TERMINAL 1 of the diode (Daytime running light no. 2) to TERMINAL 2 to TERMINAL 8 of the dimmer SW to TERMINAL 16
to GROUND, and also flows from the HEAD (HI LH), (HI RH) fuse to TERMINAL 2 of the headlights to TERMINAL 3 to
TERMINAL 2 of the daytime running light relay no. 4 to TERMINAL 1 to GROUND, causing the high beam to operate.
HEAD RELAY [ENGINE ROOM R/B]
2−1 : Closed with light control SW at HEAD position or dimmer SW at FLASH position
Closed with engine running and parking brake lever released
DIMMER RELAY [ENGINE ROOM R/B]
Changes from HEAD(LO) to HEAD(HI) with dimmer SW at FLASH position or with HEAD relay on and dimmer SW at HIGH
position

so I found the diagrams but the head lights are controlled through numerous relays and the body ECU Sorry I can not find a fix for this problem I do have access to all the electrical diagrams for the 4runner so if you think you can do better with the diagrams pm me your email and I can send them to you in PDF

I had the same problem with a 2003 Limited. I created this to fool the system to thinking the door was opened. The Pressure switch grabs any vacuum source that only exists when the engine is running. This creates a ground. The delay timer loses the a ground pulse to the relay trigger when the vacuum is gone. The delay timer is set to trip when it loses the ground. This delay can be set from 5-90 seconds. Then the timer sends a ground pulse to the door switch. The delay relay is about $15USD and the vacuum switch is about $3.50USD both are available from an online sources.
