Headlight/Foglight Combination Switch Question

I know this has been done before, but I'm not finding any info on it.

I'm getting a headlight/foglight combination switch from a partout in a couple of days. I'm wanting to use the foglight portion of the switch to use for my HID's on my ARB, to save up some much needed room for switches on my dash. After looking at different pics, it looks like they'll both mount up the same, but what is different on the electrical connector? Obviously the new switch is going to have more plugs than mine to accommodate the fog light wiring, but will I have to resplice all of the wiring to make it work? I'm up for whatever it's gonna take, I just want to know what I'm getting into beforehand.

When I was looking at some info on using the stock relay to power my after market fogs I came across a guys thread where he installed some Hella micro fogs in the stock fog light space. He switched the stalks like you're talking about doing, but I think his was already pre wired from the factory, I'm not 100% though. I'd try and find the thread and link you to it but I'm on my phone. Do you know if yours came pre wired?

Mine doesn't have any pre wiring, I don't think 97's even came with that combination switch. Wiring is going to be interesting when it comes time.

Well if anything, that thread shows you how to get the stalk off. It's a piece of cake. I wouldn't think the wiring would be too difficult. I think the hardest part would be connecting it to the stalk. IIRC there was plenty of room to run the wire down through the (steering column?) and to even put a relay under the dash. I wish I could help out more. Good luck!!

Not sure about 97's...but my 2000 SR5 came with no fog lights. I purchased a set of used OEM fogs and then a new headlight stalk. All I did to make the foglights work was: mounted the foglights, plugged them into the per-existing wiring harness (never noticed them before, until I looked for them), installed a foglight relay (in the fuse box under the hood), and last replaced my stock headlight stalk with a new one that also operated foglights.

The connector in the steering wheel, where the headlight stalk plugs into, was already pre-wired for the foglights. All I had to do was unplug my old stalk and plugged in the new one. If yours isn't already pre-wired...good luck on getting your switch to work. You'll have to install pins (attached to your wire) in the connector, then run the wires down through the steering wheel column and to your lights. That's if your connector even has room in the correct spot for the new pins?

Heck, just look under the front bumper to see if you have exciting foglight wiring/plugs...if they're there, you're probably good to go!

I really like this idea! I might have to do something like that with my Hellas... Though I'm trying to wire them up with my high beams with an on/off switch... Hmmm...

not all stalks will fit directly. There was a change sometime in 2000 or 2001, not sure exactly when. The newer stalks are thicker so you can't install them to the old steering column ring unless you get the new ring as well.

I had a similar idea as that a long time ago, to get all my offroad lights to turn on when I pull the high beam lever towards me...hopefully I'll get around to that too.

You might just have to put a few extra pins in the plug that you have. Most OEM plugs don't use all the pin holes. You might just have to crimp some pigtails on new pins and slide the pins in the appropiate position in the plug to get the new one to "wire up" from there it would be like wiring any fog relay switch up... etc.

If I had pictures of the plugs and the pins I could give you more info, but I'm not familiar with these.

Thanks for the info, today I got everything figured out and installed for anyone who is interested...

First of all, this is a 99 combo switch going into a 97. I can't attest for a newer year, say 01 or 02 switch working. But I can tell you that this setup worked perfectly in my 4runner.

The plugs for the switches are identical, the only difference is the 97 plug is missing 2 pins for the lights. I simply just checked the plugs on the 99 harness, and compared them to the 97 harness. This is where wires need to be added for the lights on the 97 harness. The large pin is the positive, small is negative.

My offroad lights work great now off of this switch, and I saved myself some dash space for more switches later down the road. The switch works even if the ignition is off, weather the lights are on or not.

I used my fog light switch (2002 Limited so already wired) to run Hella driving lights and modded the wiring (very easy mod) so they are independent of the dim/bright function - can stay on all the time). Just be careful with this, some state inspections require that fog/driving lights auto shut off with highbeam use for those who may be interested. I know in VA fogs must shut off when highbeams come on to pass state inspections

Most driving light kits I have installed say to wire the lights so they only operate when the high beams are on. Fog light kits say the opposite. Missouri (and the People's Republic of Illinois) only say max of 4 lights on at a time (and not more than 42" off the ground [no roof lights allowed, even when turned off], but not usually enforced). Obviously, these things vary from state to state.

I don't have fog lights, I just wanted a factory look for my offroad light switch so this was the answer. Since I am just using empty pins in the connector, and using wires completely separate from anything else, the lights can be used anytime I want. Even if the ignition is off, or high beams are on.

I'm looking into this mod as well, and I would like to have the control as the OP mentioned he now has, so I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

The light bar I purchased came with a full wire harness (switch, relay, plenty of wire). What I would like to do is use the wire harness that was supplied to me, and basically substitute the stock fog switch instead of the one supplied.

My question is, how can I do this and maintain full function of the light bar regardless of high/low beam, etc.? Please notice the switch supplied is a 3 wire switch, how can I make this work? I've wired many houses, but the whole relay issue escapes me, I'm sure I'll catch up later after I'm done with this project, but that will have to come first. :dizzy:

Its easy if you have the parts! You will still have to wire in a fuse and relay, etc. for the rest of it - you'll just be using a switch at the stalk for the on/off signal.

just be aware....in early 2000 ( maybe late 99)they did a switch and mounting change. the screws and fitting wont match up.. it wont mount up to the stock early steering housing ( pre 99+) luckily the wires and plug do plug and play...so you want a pre 2000 stalk/lever/switch thingy
