Extended Warranty Still Offered
With 65 miles left before my factory warranty expired on my 2004 4Runner, I made some calls regarding extended warranties as talked about above.
1. I called for Scott Moss and he NO LONGER works for the dealer in Richmond, Virginia. I spoke with JOHN WARD there and he told me about a mandatory increase in their price which put the 6year/100,000 at $790.00 plus tax. John Ward was very nice however I tried option #2.
2. I called Shaun McKinsey (1-800-331-5056) at Palmiero Toyota who monitors this board and he is still offering the 6 year/100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty for $700.00 plus tax which came to $742.00. There is $0 deductible.
The whole process took 5 minutes by phone. You'll need to provide your name/address/phone number/mileage/VIN #/credit card #. Very simple transaction to make. Shaun appreciates all the business we can give him from this board and beyond.
Amazingly I didn't have to play phone tag with anyone!

If you are from Washington (state?), why are you paying sales tax to PA? I would inquire about having my $42 sales tax refunded.

i'm very interested in purchasing the extended warranty myself. i think i'll try Shuan but have some questions.
1. is the warranty offered by Toyota? or some 3rd party?
2. Do i get some sort of certificate of extended warranty once i purchase it?

The warranty is the Toyota Extra Care PLATINUM factory-backed vehicle service agreement.

In less than 24 hours FedEx delivered a copy of the application (already filled out), my receipt, a business card, brochure about the warranty and a list of everything covered (and what is not covered). See Toyota website for more information on the Platinum Plan. From what I've read on posts, the certificate of extended warranty comes within a couple weeks, so YES.

As mentioned before, this Platinum warranty from Shuan already saved my bacon - to the tune of around $2300. This was for replacement of the traction control computer & yaw sensor (of which there is a TSB for 2003s). The dealer pulls the warranty number right up in their computer, & viola - you pay nothing!

You are correct, and Washington's sales tax rate is 6.5%, which is more than PA's. However, how many individuals actually pay use tax? In PA, I would say that over 90% of people who aren't either in business or are tax professionals have never even heard of the use tax. The Commonwealth has no enforcement of the use tax with respect to individual consumers.
In addition, the purchase of a warranty may not be a taxable sale in Washington. It is in PA, so it probably is in Washington too. But there is at least some gray are regarding whether a warranty would constitute tangible personal property subject to tax.
I guess it's just easier to pay the $42 and get on with it. However, the PA dealer should not be collecting sales tax on consumers located in Washington. I hope they are remitting it....

I'm sure they are. First, Shaun is a stand-up guy and the dealership seems to be, too. But secondly, if the dealership were audited by the state and they found that the funds were not remitted, they would probably be in very deep trouble.Baba Booey said:

Another interesting option is to buy a warranty from you auto insurance company.
They cover more than Toyota, like accidental damage. i.e. dump a soda in you dash. Just remember claims can affect your rate.
An insurance company is not sketchy like 3rd party warranties. Pay as you go = no refunds to worry about.
I'm not sure how easy claims are. But Toyota Service advisors will represent Toyota's best interest when deciding to warranty a repair or not, under a Toyota warranty. With an outside warranty, they don't care.

Great thread guys! I'll be negotiating tonight when I pick up my truck from service. I have about 35,800 miles on it! After work I am going to read thru it with a fine tooth comb, before I walk over to the dealer........then maybe I'll have a few questions. I think I will try to summarize all the prices I have found throughout this thread and post it up for easy reference.

I'm also looking for an ext warranty. Many people say to buy it now instead of waiting until 36K since it will cost less now.. Please keep us posted on your summary.

If you are from Washington (state?), why are you paying sales tax to PA? I would inquire about having my $42 sales tax refunded.

First, I'd like to address this question.
When you purchase an extended service contract, the selling price is taxable here in the Commonwealth of PA. You are paying PA state sales tax. Period. It dosen't matter where you are located in the US, you are doing business in PA, therefore, you must pay PA sales tax. As far as paying tax in "your" state, it's not appicable.
Imagine you're on vacation and you need an oil change. You get the oil change and you pay tax on that service. When you get back to the state that you reside in, you don't pay tax on that oil change again, do you? It's the same with the warranties. It's where you do business.
There is no personal 'use' tax in PA. Some states have it, we don't.
As far as some of you that haven't heard back from me yet, I might not have received your email; (this has happened before... esp w/ the security/filter package I have here at work) You can call me at my toll free # 800 331 5056.

I am not so sure that your example is on point. Let's say that I order something over the Internet or by telephone from an out-of-state vendor. I will not be charged sales tax on that item unless the seller has a pysical presence in my state. If I order tires from Tirerack and I am not located in a state where Tirerack has a physical presence, then I am not charged sales tax. However, under the law, I am required to pay Pennsylvania's Use Tax. Very few individuals actually pay Use Tax or even know that it exists, but it does. Businesses are very familiar with it and pay it all the time, but it applies to individuals as well.
Pennsylvania does not have jurisdiction to impose its sales and use tax on a Washington state resident, and Washington state does not have jurisdiction to require a PA company selling property or services over the Internet to collect and remit its sales and use tax on behalf of its residents.
You may want to read the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Quill Corp. v. North Dakota.
Also, PA's Use Tax can be found at 72 P.S.

Paltinum warranty
I also called Shaun and got the 7 yr / 100K / 0 deductible Platinum warranty for $825 + tax. Doesn't matter that I'm in NY and he's in PA. It really couldn't have been easier. No sales hype, just good service. The best price I could get from my local dealer (DCH) was around list, something like $1400. Of course, they wanted $1800 when I bought the truck. They must think they can grab you while you're still innocent.
Is this thing worth the price? I've had extended warranties on a Honda Accord (which paid for itself a couple of times over, surprisingly) and a Dodge Grand Caravan (which REALLY paid for itself). Who knows if I'll need it for my 4R, but you never know. This is a hugely complex mechanical beast, with very complex electronics. For $825, it's a good investment, I think, even though I've had zero problems with this vehicle (except for a seat belt buckle not working. Go figure, I've never heard of one of those failing before.) Just one of the computers going bad would be worth the price of the extended warranty. I have to admit, I feel a lot more comfortable having this than not, even though this is such a reliable and well-built truck.
