Hi, I have a 96 2x4 4runner the heater core seems to continually be clogging, I blew it out with a hose that worked, it is now clogged again, barely passing water through, should I keep clearing it with a hose? Does this indicate corrosion that will eventually require replacement? What say all?

how does your radiator look? does it have rust flakes in it?

X2...if your heater core keeps getting clogged...the cause has to be coming from your coolant system. I would flush your system, then double check your heater core. Blow it out if necessary, and that should take care of your problem...at least that's where I would start. Good luck!

Yeah there's rust flakes in the heater core bigtime, it's like corrosion soup in there now. SO, I bypassed it for now. CLEARLY, it was on the fast track to springing a vicious leak and stinking my car up bigtime. Since I already lost 2 engines to coolant system failures, not about to do it again.

Update clogging even more often
Ok, keeps clogging, is this the sign of a core that just needs replacement? ALSO, can somebody clarify how automotive heater cores are made? It does not appear that they have LOWER TANKS, plus the intake and outlet are on the same side of the core, so how does the hot water migrate into the core/ fins area?

Although I've never looked at a runner heater core, I'd presume they are the same as every other core made since they started putting heaters in cars. Not trying to be a smart-ass but the question is irrelevant.
Are you sure the contamination is coming from the heater core? I would also be very closely watching my whole cooling system.
If the rad is over 10 yrs old, you may want to consider changing that out as well to avoid possible cross- contamination with the trans cooler.
You flushed your whole system and not just the heater core right?
Did you use chemicals when you flushed your system/core?
Heater cores are a pita to change out as generally, you have to stand on your head for long spells. Hate it !
I run a VW Jetta for 2 years on stop-leak so the heater core would stay sealed up lol... talk about a nasty job to change that one !
