Heater problems

This is a first, today I started having problems with my heater fan and came here for answers and saw this thread on the subject. The fan came on but I was limited to 2 speeds. There are 4 speeds total but the 3 lowest speeds ran at med high and the high speed ran at high speed. This afternoon everything was ok.
 
This might sound silly, but I have been using the recirculate button as much as possible. At least until the windows start to fog. I have not had it freeze yet with the tempurature at 16 degrees.
I hate to buy a new fan if it will have the same problem. The dealer wanted $180 just for the part. I have seen them on the net for $45.
 
anyone with instructions on pulling the blower motor out? I would like to completely dry it out and see if there are some mods I could do myself.
 
What I did in my '04


Under the glove box pasasenger side.

Remove 1 Phillips screw in middle of the panel

Panel has clips on the sides, just pull it down on each side.

This panel has electronic gizmos attached so be careful with the cables.

3 Torx screws hold the fan/blower in place. A mirror is helpful but not necessary.

I found it easier to remove the fan then the wire harness. To each his own.

I could not remove the fan blade from the motor on mine. At least I didn't want to force it and break something.

Total time for disassembly, about 15 minutes.

Like I said in an earlier post, I have been using the recirculate mode on the heater controls as much as possible in the hope that this would keep it dry. We had 4" of snow that turned to a heavy rain this Wednesday and 20 Degrees the next morning and it did not freeze. Is this just luck?
 
its ugly everyone write Toyota Corp. with a complaint and maybe they will pay for their mistake in making a heater box not ready for North America climates even if yours hasn't messed up still write in for all of us that are having problems or us that are trying to get their money back lol but really send in complaints
 
Well I finally took everything apart. All parts were completely dry. Cleaned everything and reinstalled as original with no new TSB parts. Left it in the hangar most of the day (in pieces) to make sure everything inside the motor was dry. After sitting outside (around 5 degrees) for an hour or so, the blower would not work. It did work after I put it back together inside the hangar. So I guess I am back to square one. The TSB is not related to my problem. Any other ideas?
 
So this happened to me 2 days ago. Contacted Toyota & said i'd take 1.2 hours & $120 to fix. Does anyone have an cheap do-it-yourself fix I can use to keep water from getting into my blower? Preferably without removing the blower. Would something on top of the air filter, like felt, work? Thats what the toyota guy suggesed. Thanks

BTW i wish i knew this last week so i could prevent this. Toyota should fix for free since obviously a design flaw. They can do a recall on floor mats but not this...
 
Just had this problem on my 2005 V6. Found the TSB in this thread, so I removed the glove compartment, removed the filter, and pushed on the fan with my screwdriver to force the fan to turn (while being careful not to bend the fins), the fan was hard to push at first and then came loose of the ice, started the engine and turned on the fan full speed, I could see the water blowing away at the top of the fan. I will try to have Toyota perform the TSB or at least apply the sealant around the unit. Thanks guys!
 
interesting thread. i ran into this problem 2 weeks ago with my '04 i found that my blower motor resistor was NG. i found this out by taking out the resistor. ohming out the resistor and finding excessive Resistance. its located by the blower motor and has 2 large and 2 smaller guage wires going to it with 2 philips scews holding it in. maybe this can help some-other members having issues.:beer:
 
So instead of going to the Toyota dealership & paying over $120 for them to apply & wait for sealant to dry, I decided to leave my glove box off & crank the fan by hand in one direction until loose (making sure the fan is turned off first). Then I turn the fan back on & it works fine. It does this once every few days. I also put a thin shop towel cut to size on top of the air filter to help keep any more water from getting in. I saved up for a while to get my 4runner so i'll do it this way instead of handing my money over to the stealership. Hope this helps someone.
