Heavy smoke under the hood..

Hey guys, had a very sad day today, which was supposed to be a happy day.
This is what happened. I got my Defiant light bar last week and I was super happy. I went out to an auto parts store and bought 4 spotlights for the bar.
I made an appointment with my auto service centre to get the bar installed today. I got a call back in 4 hours saying the runner is ready for pickup. It was just looking awesome with the bar and lights. Drove it for 20 minutes and all of the sudden saw heavy smoke coming out under the hood and smelt like burning plastic. Parked it on the roadside and opened the hood.....lots of smoke came out. Tried once to start the truck and it totally refused...:(
All the lights were running fine, so the battery wasnt dead.

Called the tow company and towed my runner back to the service centre. It was already 7 pm and the location was closed, so I just left it there.

Any idea what might have gone wrong???

check all your relay and fuses only plastic thing that will burn in the truck is that, imo the shop ****ED UP

I ask that you provide some more detail. This will help get a response. Without information many users will simply read and move on because they don't know enough about the situ to really contribute.

Questions:
* what kind of engine is it? [4CYL / 6CLY / Diesel]

* did any dash (CEL) lights light up?

* did it get hot?

* when is the last time you changed the oil?

* did you check any of the fluids?

* did the engine "crank over" when you tried to start it? Did it just click, click, click?

* what color was the smoke?

* you were driving so I assume the smoke came from the hood BUT how much smoke?


There is no fuse that could cause this. Perhaps and electrical fire from bad wiring of those lights. I hope it is something simple and easy to fix :bat:

first off nice truck. second, i would take pictures of the truck, under the hood, under front end, around new light bar, and so on before the mechanics get a hold of it. this will keep the company that did your lights from saying the mechanics made it worse or that it wasnt like that when it left. very suspicious that you had just picked it up and it happened. did you call them after the runner broke down?
 
Thanks all for your replies. I towed my car to the shop around 7 pm and they were closed by that time so I left it there, sent them an email and going to see them now. Good thing is they are right across from my office.

water pump, and all other oil. It was running perfectly for the whole week.

* did you check any of the fluids? - Fluid level was fine, no leakage found

* did the engine "crank over" when you tried to start it? Did it just click, click, click? - It was cranking for few seconds and then died

* what color was the smoke? - Pure white

* you were driving so I assume the smoke came from the hood BUT how much smoke? - One big gush, I parked the car and stopped the ignitation

Yes I did call them but they were closed by that time :( so I left them a vm and also emailed them.

Got a phone call from the shop and this is what they said. They said the wiring that they did for the lights had nothing to do with it and they checked that all the wiring and fuses were ok.
They are blaming it on the Best Buy as they did the wiring/install for the remote start. They mentioned that the wire for the remote start was laying on the engine and when the engine got too hot the pastic melted and the copper wire was touching the metal part of the engine and caused all the short circuit/smoke and problem. I am like what....as I drove it only for 10 minutes.
But I am surprised as I installed the remote start from Best Buy almost one and a half year ago and I already drove 15k miles since then and never had any problem. I am wondering as the shop guys did the timing belt, ac belt, spark plug replacement on my truck couple of weeks ago they might have moved the wiring for the remote start around and thats why all this problem happened :(.
They also said that the short circuit might have blown the computer and thats why its not starting now......they are giving rough estimate on the computer replacement around $1k....wtf............
 
Sounds suspicious as hell to me, I'm willing to bet the light wiring job is what did it but it's gonna be a ***** to prove without evidence.
 
did you take pictures of it before the mechanics got to it? that way you know exactly what it looked like after the lights install?
 
:( No I did not. I always use to trust them as I was taking my truck and my car there all the time........ Now they are saying the ignitor is also gone and that part is $400

damn. starting to sound like a nightmare. im sure if you post all the parts you need in classifieds and share your story people will be willing to help you out. is this your dd or do you have another car you can drive in the meantime?
 
Sold my Accord last month so this is the only ride that I have now. I asked the shop guy to give me a ride home today after work....Tomorrow morning have to take a cab back to work.

damn so you have no choice but to get it done asap. that sucks man especially since it was completely out of your control. sorry man wish i could help.
 
As an elevator tech, when I have a problem with an elevator and I was JUST there working on it - it's usually something I did. Your truck was running fine, they messed with the wiring, and now it's fried. They either directly caused it, or they moved the unrelated wiring into harm's way...either way the odds are HEAVY that it's a result of their work. I'd ride 'em like seabiscuit to help make it right. If they don't cut you a significant deal, I'd at least tow it to the dealership and make sure the crappy shop doesn't make money off of their mistake!
 
I am getting my truck back tonight. They fixed the problem. They said the coil was burnt out because of the short circuit.
Damage $120 for the coil + $120 for install = $240

But they cut all the wiring for the command start....:(

thats fu@k up i will be mad as hell if i was you, they should fix the problem they caused and pay you back you for the command start they destroyed
 
Wow. It's not even my runner and I'm getting mad for you! I would file a civil suit against them because of the damage they caused. It's because of them the car caught fire and because of them your command start is destroyed. Ill bet once they are served those papers they will be willing to make a offer

$120 to install a coil?!? I hope that's mostly diagnostic charges! Either way, it all sounds fishy to me and I wouldn't be paying them.
