Hellamatic - Build Thread

Opinions Please!

Here's a really rudimentary Photoshop - I've been thinking of building some a-pillar mounting brackets for a pair of Rigid Duallys. Any thoughts?

I think I might! Inspired by the windshield brackets you can get for jeeps, and I think it might work on the 4R - I need to buy a pair of duallys for the back of my rack anyway, so I don't really have anything to lose. I plan on aiming them wide to pick up any deer that are hiding in the ditch.

Nope, factory battery and alternator - the LED lighting is extremely efficient and draws very little power. The 6" halogens on the bumper don't draw tons either.

I also rarely have all lighting on at the same time either, as they all serve a different purpose - for example, the 6" lights work well when it's snowing, but the 40" bar is useless in the same situation.

Where did you get the radio? Was it pre-programmed for you?
I used to use these radios when I worked in the field, but they were always already installed in the vehicles and pre-programmed with all channels needed for Alberta.

It's funny, I was just looking at this sale on the FJ Forums and wondering if anyone made them for the 4Runner. Good luck with the project!

I ordered mine online with a copy of the programming software and configured it myself - it was a good price, but definitely some "grey market" goods...PM me if you would like the name of the place. You can also buy the radios from most telecommunications stores as well, and they come preprogrammed with many common frequencies used in AB.

At first, looking at the photo, i thought you had those on before and I thought, wow that is cool.

Than I read that you are thinking about doing it :)

So I just got my RevTek spacer kit today, going to work on installing pretty soon. I'm planning on running a similar setup, 285/70/17, and the wheels have the same -12 offset. I don't run mudguards, and I plan on doing the fender liner mod I saw on here. How bad was the rub without the body chop? Only bad on full flex, or noticeable under normal pavement pounding?

I love your setup, I'm currently working on painting most of the chrome at my shop. Going for the murdered out look myself. Thanks for the great thread, and all the great photos!
 
Couple new "mods"

Well, after months of thinking about it, I finally got around to building some brackets and mounting some windshield lights:

I just trimmed the rubber piece to fit around a bracket I bent up - it mounts underneath to an existing bolt in the fender:

And now, quite possibly my worst mod ever; I hit a deer heading home on the very same day that I installed the lights....

Destroyed the bumper, hood, grill, passenger fender, passenger door, folded back the AC lines, and poked a hole in the rad. Awesome.

Looks like you had a direct hit, no glancing hoof blow for you. That's worth a 100pts.

Hope you are ok, truck will be better. Glad it wasn't a moose or elk.

Deer are out of control here, they are in our neighborhoods and jump out startled all the time from lawns. Almost as bad as squirrels. But bigger.

Haha, a 2014+ conversion would be the best suggestion!

The fact that I killed him definitely made me feel better, haha. I'm already scheming on the next round of upgrades - I'm hauling my unit into the city on my flat deck on Monday to get an estimate and drop it off for repair. The rep from my insurance company says they can likely put on an aftermarket bumper as long as I pay the price difference, so we'll see how that goes. Grill is going to get redone too - Jesse with Prestigious Grills is already designing and drafting version 2.0 for me with a different look.

All told, my deductible is only $250, my insurance isn't going to go up, and the 4R isn't my daily driver - this whole experience is just more of an inconvenience than anything.
 
Here's a question for you all to weigh in on; should I have the body shop paint the hood flat black when they replace it?
