Hello, new and have a huge question

TJs4runner

I have a 95 4runner and so far I have had to a ton of work to it. When I bought it it had a blown head gasket. I have replaced the radiator, head work, basically everything up above has been fixed. New timing water pump all that.

OK with that being said, I'm not sure why it's doing this but when I first start it, it runs like a champ. Sounds smooth and idles fine. After you drive it for a bit it stalls. It starts right back up but after a few seconds it stalls again. Just going a few miles down the road it stalls. I can put it natural when coming to a stop and it stalls. It's driving me nuts.

I can two foot it to keep it going at a stop but this gets very annoying.

Does anyone know what the issue could be?

Hows it idle? Maybe some idle screw adjustment might help if you have to keep your foot on the gas to keep it from stalling

Good luck

I was have a similar problem recently and found out that my intake tube had a big crack in it, thus it was pulling in lots of un-metered air and causing it to run like crap. Check your whole intake tube and all of your vacuum lines.

That was my same exact thought

I agree with this. I had the same issue. Get the truck running and use carb cleaner to test the engine for leaks.

Dirty intake or air leak would be consistant through the whole time the engine was running. Clogged fuel filter will let the engine run normal until the vacuum builds in the lines. When you shut the truck off the vacuum slowly bleeds and returns to normal allowing you to start and drive agin for a short time.

I had this problem when I bought my 93' The thing would run perfect when first started up, once the engine warmed up, about 10 miles of driving, it would cut out and then stall. With mine, the tach would jump around a bit then stall. Mine turned out to be a bad ignitor.

Ok the fuel filter got changed today. It made a bit of a difference but it still wants to stall out. I don't know what it is. I'm baffled.

How do u test the engine with carb cleaner? When i had it totally apart everything was cleaned with degreaser before it was put it back together.

With the engine running, spray carb cleaner around all the vacuum lines and plastic hoses around the throttle body, including where there's seals and gaskets, like the base of the throttle body for example.....if the engine's rpms pickup or throttle up higher when you spray any certain area.....you just found a leak that can cause the miss you're speaking of.

As far as setting the idle up a bit.....look at the throttle body and try to find the cable that is coming from the gas pedal, the metal lever that moves when you step on the gas ( maybe get a friend to step on the gas so u can see the lever moving?) there's a threaded screw that acts as a 'stop' for your idle position.....if you tighten that screw a 1/2 turn, it will make the engine idle up, thus giving you a higher rpm idle. Once you fix the problem, you'll have to change the idle setting back to appx 800-900 rpm, keep that in mind when you're turning that screw.

Keep us posted :smash:

I think i might have a few issues, i have a vacuum line that has no home, instead, it has a screw in it. That could be the issue. I have no clue to where it goes. So...does anyone have any photos of the engine that could help me? I have the 6 cylinder motor. It is a 95 model. Idk how to post photos yet but I will try to get one uploaded of the line. Any help would be greatly appreciated! At least now we are starting to get somewhere! Thank you guys!

I have a 91 but the vacuum lines should be very close ill try to get one up on here later tonight or tomorrow from mine my other 91 has the same engine that your 95 has (there are 2 different 3.0's very close to the same though), but all of the vacuum lines were removed before i got it

There are some pics of the motor. You can see the screw in the one hose. Does anyone know where that hose goes so I can get it fixed?

I just looked at mine, the hose w/ the screw in it, goes over to the passenger fender well and hooks to the underneath side of what LOOKS like a miniature fuel filter, that is mounted on the fender well, right beside the fuse box ( on my 93 p'up w/ same engine) .
