Help - 2015 4Runner Starting Problem

I have a 2015 4Runner TRD Pro with about 40K miles.

On 2 occasions this week, after driving about 25 minutes and returning to the vehicle and trying to start the engine I get a no start situation.

Here is some Info/Symptoms:

Battery is new and strong
Starter spins - as normal, no delay, and strong
No apparent spark - starter spins the engine, but not even a "cough"
Code Reader shows Zero codes being thrown
After about a dozen (12) tries or so it finally catches, and the engine starts without hesitation ( no stumble; no sputter; just starts as normal)

Seems to only occur after driving at least say 25 minutes.

Once it starts , I can re-start a dozen times over the course of the day in my driveway and no problem.

UPDATE: After the current occurrence; I can eventually get it to start ; but then it dies and won't start . It's got to be electrical- once the engine catches it runs perfectly normally.

I have an extended Platinum Toyota warranty , so I am not worried about taking it to the dealer. But they probably won't be able to figure it out unless it is doing it for them.

Dirty MAF sensor, possibility ?

Thoughts please ?

Does it occur often after driving 25 min? If so you could set it up to arrive at the dealer when it would be likely to fail. Seems to possibly be heat related when everything is warmed up. Checking for spark and fuel would be my first troubleshooting operations.

I only have taken trips of about 25 minutes lately. I was in Lowe's the first time for 20 minutes, and when I came out was the first no start. It finally started after a dozen attempts. Agree, seems possibly heat related .

Right now idling in my driveway for 20 minutes, will test it to see whether I can replicate.

After today's occurrence , it was more consistently not starting . A few times it caught, but then died.

So far anyway, no issue once running and/or while underway. Suggesting maybe not fuel system related?

Maybe MAF dirty?

One thing to check is the Fuel Injection fuse (INJ) in the fuse box under the hood near the battery. Maybe its loose, going bad or corroded?

Thanks, I will check. However, fuses generally are good or not good. Also, the the engine once it starts runs without issue.

Sounds like the fuel pump is going bad. Newer fuel pumps have an internal pressure regulator. When the regulator goes bad, it has a tendency to work just fine on cold starts and idle situations. But after working at full duty for awhile it gives up.

I’ve seen corroded fuses and relays cause intermittent problems. They would have barely any contact to the metal insert. Just something to check since its pretty easy and painless to do. Might as well do a quick check on all the fuses with a multimeter.

Could be the MAF. There are cleaners out there - haven't used them though. Air, fuel & spark are the primary things needed to get started. Intermittent fuel pressure? Vapor lock? Seems odd you're not getting a code on a no start issue.

Dealer will have a diagnostic computer that will capture data from all sorts of sources and possibly some history files that are stored but don't result in a OBDII code. Good time to document the problem history with dates, times, places, and what happened, etc.

That could be it also. Theres a recall for the fuel pumps. I have a recall notice for the fuel pump for my 2015 TRD PRO.

This may sound odd, but have you tried to start it with a different key when it doesn’t start? It almost sounds like there might be an issue with the transponder in the key. Just a thought.

Yes. I had the exact same thought about a bad transponder on the key. But th issue did not resolve with the back up key.

I never received a recall notice for my 2015 TRD Pro on a fuel pump. Is there a way to look up and see whether my VIN was affected?

Thanks. Could be . Would a bad fuel pump throw a CEL? I have no codes.

Possibly explains why after a non-start event it sometimes starts runs fine, then suddenly dies. Once it's running though it is fine, I guess fuel pumps going bad do things like that?

Maybe my Platinum warranty will pay off.

When I enter my VIN this is what comes up...

Mine show nothing. But I will cal next week and talk to my service advisor. I've go the Platinum Warranty, so cost won't be an issue. The issue will be thm being able to diagnosis an intermittent problem before i really get stuck somewhere.

What sucks about that recall is they don’t have a remedy yet. So people that have fuel pump failures are probably getting the same fuel pump that fails installed again for the time being until a remedy is available.
