Help: Alpine SPS-619 Sound Quality

I just installed Alpine Type S 6x9 in my 2007 SR5 with an upgraded Scion t1809 headunit. The magnet in the original speaker was the smallest thing I've ever seen. The magnet in the Alpine was much much larger so I was expecting more throw and overall sound. However, after installing one speaker, sitting in the car, and changing the fader from left to right, I found that the original speaker was much louder and had more bass. Does anyone have any explanation for this or anything I can do to improve it? Needless to say, I am pretty frustrated and I'm not sure what is wrong here. Thanks in advance.

I've had the same problem before with other vehicles. I've kept my speakers in my 4r stock because they're pretty darn good for stock speakers in my opinion. When going aftermarket you're better off going with an amp and a component system. I'm sure the treble is pretty good in your new alpines, a lot of times I think they design the aftermarket speakers with subwoofers in mind as a whole system together to offset the lack of bass in the speakers.

Currently I'm running my factory speakers with the pioneer avh-3300bt and they sound great. I might be wrong on your issue but it's food for thought nonetheless.

Thanks Zach, but I am not giving up on them yet. With the speaker brackets that I bought, there is not an air tight seal as there is with the factory speakers. Maybe if I made it airtight, there would be a substantial difference.

I doubt the airtight thing will help since the door itself is the speaker box and is not air tight.

I think Zach may be right about the aftermarket amp thing, or at least on the right track. For one day I had my stock JBL amp connected and with JBL HU and the MB Quart components I'm using now and it sounded terrible so I changed it back the next day. I felt like the biggest problem was the lack of high/low pass filters and adjustable EQ settings.

I think most people don't upgrade speakers unless they've upgraded their HU and aftermarket HUs have higher quality built in amps than OEM units like Scion HU.

I also feel that Alpine speakers are crap (despite my love for their HUs & amps) so that could be a problem although I've heard other say they're great.

One last thing, and I don't know for sure about this one but I think round 6.5s (especially component sets) produce lower tones than ovular 6x9s.

I'm no expert, but your new speaker can handle a lot more power then your stock speakers. Your head unit can't put out that much power, so for your aftermarket speakers to really sound good you need an amplifier to feed them the power they need. Also, instead of going with the 6x9's I would've gone with a set of component speakers, that way you have separate speakers handling the low and high notes and it sounds a little more clear and full. I replaced all my speakers and thought it was a minor improvement from the stock sets, then I hooked them all up to an amplifier and I was blown away, the difference is definitely worth getting an amp. And once you add a sub or two, you have have the perfect system lol
