Help basic maintenance today and runner Wont Start???

Just finished changing my spark plugs and tightening my valve covers while i was at it and now the my 4runner will not start? All accessories turn on but it will not crank. By the way it is a '97 Limited 3.4. Anyone have any clues? It does still have original coil packs and wires from '97. Any help would be great....:ybrick:

i would go back and go over everything you did once more! if it ran before plugs and valve cover something must not be hooked back up properly if the only thing you changed was that

Did you plug the coil packs back unto the harness?

Did you disconnect the MAF Sensor and forget to plug it back in. Your engine will not start with this unplugged.

I've triple checked and everything is connected properly. I also should mention while tightening closest valve bolt on driver side something arced (pop) with I assume the wires that are in that harness there covering that bolt. Ha I then disconnected battery and proceeded with the plugs.

Time to check your fuses.

i checked all the fuses but unsure how to check the relays... maybe ohms test on the relays?? does anyone know?

Check the ground by the diagnostic plug. People loosen this to get to driver side plugs and don't retighten and nothing works on the engine without this ground.

checked it. Its tight i didnt have to loosen it to get to the plug.

What is the battery voltage?

Headlights and all working?

Battery Voltage is 12.8

Update i just noticed when i turn the key to the start position the radio goes out and the clock fades out if that helps diagnose...

Bad connection somewhere. I had these exact same issues and it came down to a bad connection. Check everything.

hmmm checked all the fuses could it be the Starter Relay? I called autozone and it was $43 :wow:

Did you load test the battery or just check voltage? It may show proper voltage but 1 (or more) of the cells may have gone bad and under load (like when starting) it gives up. I think your battery gave up.

Yea could be the battery is from '09. But wouldnt it at least try and crank or make the starter click? Also I tried jump starting... no go...

Not necessarily. The starter needs amps to turn and if the battery has dead cells, when the starter relay closes it burns up all the voltage and the battery goes into a dead state. Thats why you loose the clock and radio.

Try jumping it with the battery cables disconnected from the battery in your runner.

It could be a loose ground as well. But in order to rule out the battery you need to load test it, not just check voltage.

ill take the battery in to autozone in the morning to get it checked out... lets hope its that simple!

Might not be the battery, if you arched it may have charred where the ground sits or either terminal, never had this problem in a car, but welding multiple times, its all electricity

just noticed i can very faintly hear the factory alarm going off its very quiet though. It did churp when i reconnected the battery after replacing plugs.... hmmm
