Help Diagnose Humm/Wallow

Hi everyone,
Having a weird issue that I'm sure the experts here can help with. I've got a sound coming from my driver's side front wheel area. It is a hum/howl that goes in an out, almost like that 70s scifi ufo sound. I can only hear it on the highway, and only when on the gas (keeping speed or accelerating). It goes away instantly when I let off the gas. Doesn't seem to be any different in a sweeping turn either way.

I automatically assumed wheel bearing (even though I thought that would be a constant hum) but I put it up on the lift and the bearing didn't have any noticeable play.

Could it be the CV? I've never heard of them doing this, just clicking at low speed. I inspected the boot, not torn, no grease thrown anywhere.

So, what should I check next?

Just checking easy items off the list... are you sure this isn't a stereo related issue? It's pretty common for electrical interference to provide feedback over the stereo and the symptoms are similar to what you describe.

Good call! Not the stereo, I thought that might be it too and turned it off. Still there.
 
I had the same noise coming from the rear, only under acceleration, it was from wear in the diff/ring and pinion.

If it is, it doesn't just fail/stop working under normal conditions, it just gets worse over time/mileage due to more wear, unless you really put it under great stress such as hard offroading, heavy towing, etc., in which case it can grenade the gears.

The good thing is you can buy a rebuilt 3rd member and it's an easy swap/DIY job at least on my rear 3rd member, just remove the old and replace with the new one and send the old one back for the core refund for under $600 to $700,

sounds like a differential bearing.

you could get it up on 4 stands and run it in gear. check all the different areas with a stethoscope.
I expect you will find the noise loudest as the differential.
 
I chased a similar noise. I couldn't feel a looseness in the bearing with the front wheels on, but when I pulled the bearing off the CV and spun it by hand it was definitely grinding.

Installed two new front wheel bearings and it's been quiet at 65-70.
