Help identifying a transfer case?

By hey guys!

I'm trying to solve a transfer case issue. I need to identify the one I picked up from the previous owner. basically i think i need a new t-case because my 4wd wont engage. Ive done a bit of research on here, and i dont think i have ADD system since i have the manual hubs, and i checked all the relays.

So here we go. I received this transmission (pictured below) as part of the purchase from the previous owner because the 4wd isnt working. At the time I was ignorant to the fact that the 3.0 and 22re had different transfer cases, so I just assumed the guy gave me the correct one from his other donor 4runner. My 4runner is a 1990 22re 5spd. Can i get some help identifying the one he gave me? there is a serial but but a search returned nothing. i dont see a model # either. I know it has the 7 bolt patter, vs the 5. Ive been on the 4x4 wire link, ( Toyota Pickup and 4Runner Drivetrain Specifications )but that only gets me so far.

also I found a receipt for the t-case CURRENTLY installed on the truck, but I don't see a model.

It looks like a forward shift 4cyl t case. That is probably whats in your runner. The only real difference would be if yours is a top shift, but you can swap that over. A w56 and a g53 are transmissions, not transfer cases.

Lets make sure its your t case before you swap it out thought. What have you done to check the 4wd system?

thank for the reply hyde. Crap youre right I was looking at the transmissions chart. dumb mistake.

Basically so far Ive looked at all the relays and fuses having to do with 4wd and they check out. I did a lot of reading on ADD assuming I had it, but another member told me since I have manual hubs I don't have ADD so I have turned my attention to the transfer case. basically there are no lights on the dash, and the transfer case shifter wont go into anything but 2wd.
 
You got lucky that you have a gear driven case (7 bolts on rear output) and not a chain drive case, input look to be 21 spline. RF1A case
Someone did a piss poor job of storing that case, spend some time cleaning those exposed bearing on the input side and flush the crap out of the case.

What brand are your manual hubs? Aisin or warn or some other? So you cant physically pull the shift lever into 4wd? You should be able to pull it back into 4hi, then move it to the right and up for 4 low. Pushing in the clutch makes it a little easier sometimes. Can you remove some interior trim to get to the access plate on the top of the t case and look inside to check the shift rails and forks are binding? Youll have to pull a bunch of the trim anyway to swap the case out.

Who will be swapping the t case in. Are you going to be doing this yort self or have a shop do it? Its not a bad job, just a few hours on your back with a little heavy lifting.
 
The hubs are AISIN. Maybe that will help determine if I do or dont have the ADD. And yes, the lever itself will not move into H4 at at. It will go into L4, but there is no actual engagement; the engine just revs freely as if I was in neutral.

I have not ripped open the trim yet. My timing chain decided to slip so now I have bigger issues. However once i swap in a new heart, I will be trying to figure this out, so im still interested in what your opinion is.
 
Hang on a minute, you can't get to 4lo without going through 4hi:

Does the truck drive alright in 2wd?

Do the hubs lock and unlock smoothly?

With the t-case in 2wd use your hands to check if the front drive shaft turns when the hubs are unlocked. It should.

Now lock one hub and try to turn the front d-shaft, it should not turn because the wheels aren't turning. Unlock the hub and then do the same on the other side.

Report back...

These t-cases are fairly bullet proof, unless you are abusing it badly, as in monster tires and rocks or mis-matched gears in the axles, I would check all the simple stuff first.
 
It's definitely a forward shift gear drive case that came behind a W or G series trans behind a 4 cylinder.

To see if you have ADD just look for a box mounted on the front axle right beside the diff. Will have some hoses and wires going to it.
You can't assume it doesn't have ADD because of the manual hubs, a PO could have added them.

Yes it drives fine in 2wd.

The hubs unlock and lock smoothly

I did the test on locking and unlocking the hubs. The front driveshaft turns freely if one hub is locked and the other side open. Only when both hubs are locked does the driveshaft lock up.

Yes it is. I was thinking of a locked chunk.

So if the gears and lock outs are behaving correctly it is the t-case.

Is the shifter "tight" or does it wobble? If it is not tight in place it could be the shifter bushing is worn out.

Using the pattern from before, does the shifter pull straight back to 4hi? Over and up to nuetral? If it is not shifting correctly maybe the shifter was inserted incorrectly.

If it shifts through the pattern easily enough, but does not engage 4wd then I would say it is the front output.

Check some more and let us know.
