Hey all, its been awhile!!! I've been reading for the last week or so though, trying to figure out what's wrong with my 96 limited.
Background: I took the kids to school recently, and I drove the 4runner - first time I had driven it in a month probably. I have about 10 miles before the first stop sign/light and when I got there and stopped, steam was rolling out of the engine bay. Going so fast, and it being so early, I didn't notice it until then. I pulled over as soon as I could. Here's where I get stupid. I was a diesel mechanic in the Army and I know better. I was just stupid. No other way around it. I out some water in the radiator after it cooled down. I tightened the hose that was loose, that was causing the leak. And I proceeded to take them to school. Everything was fine. Then headed home it started getting hot again. I live on a rural road without many pull offs. As soon as I got to this church about 2 miles from my house I whip it in the parking lot. As I'm coasting in the engine shuts off and an oil temp light comes on. The check engine light has NOT came on yet.
I eventually got it home and fixed the problem hose. Put new coolant in it. There wasn't anything to flush as it was dry. Everything seemed fine idling I'm my driveway. Fast forward a few weeks (having not driven the 4runner). I get in and head to the farm. She's running like crap and shuddering when I give it gas. I make it to the farm and do my thing. The next day I head back....same symptoms. Then on the way back home, the CE light comes on.
Oil looks decent. Natural color. No smell of gasoline in the coolant and the level of coolant is normal. No smoking out of the tail pipe. I originally was worried that I had a HG problem, but now I'm not so sure. You guys/gals have any educated (or not) guesses
Funny thing is that I was thinking about selling it to fund another project. And now I'm not sure what to do. Where should I start and/or what does this sound like the culprit is??? Thanks in advance. Any replies are much appreciated!!!
