Help me figure out what parts to purchase

A while ago someone asked about replacing their steering rack. I looked but could not find the post again.

My question is what year did they institute the new upgraded steering rack?
I'm looking at replacing the steering rack on my 1996 4Runner, because of leakage, and would like to put the more durable rack on it for longevity's sake.

Also does anyone know of any problem with Advanced Auto Parts ToughOne CV Axles, and which CV axles would y'all suggest?


Basically I'm looking for advice on what parts to use to replace my leaking Steering Rack and damaged CV axle.

Cvj axles.... Oem axle (don't get anything else!) and you can get them with silicone boots. I've had mine for years with about 4-500 mi off road... Holding up great.

Couldn't a leaky PS rack be bad PS lines?

You're probably right, but I've already traced the leak back to at least one seal around the driver's side tie rod. I have considered just replacing all of the seals in the rack but I am concerned about the age and possible internal damage from when my ball joint broke.
