help me help you: Sunroof rust issue, with pics

I am currently speaking with a VP at Toyota to address the premature rust that has accumulated on the sunroof of my 2008 Toyota 4runner. I have been seeking a fix for over a year now, and the rust is only getting worse. I know I've seen others post on here, as have I about this issue, but I would like to consolidate the threads and posts to show Toyota that this isn't an isolated issue, and deserves attention. I would greatly appreciate any members to take pictures and post them w/ your year and model, of any rust on the frame of your sunroof, as I plan to present this to Toyota. I will keep everyone updated on the progress and the outcome.

wow this is the first I am hearing of this issue. I have no rust at all on the sunroof of my '03. Is it possible that some sort of seal is broken, allowing rain water to get in and sit there?
 
Id go out and look to see if my 08 has any, but ITS AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR FAULTY SEIZED CALIPERS! Put THAT in his pipe n tell him to smoke it!
 
Dang!! What are the car washes using in Florida....Saltwater?
My 'o8 sunroof has no rust at all. Just checked last week while cleaning the seals before the winter comes along.
May want to get a body shop to fix before rust gets much worse, Then try and get Toyota to reimburse.

Looking at these pics pisses me off, I really hope Toyota recognizes this as a problem and resolves the issue,

Here's the same issue on my 05. It's actually pretty embarrassing. I threw in the ink pen for a size comparison. There are two separate areas but one is much worse than the other (obviously).

thanks everyone, it's building a better and better case daily, will get in contact w/ Toyota Monday, and then I will let everyone know the outcome.
 
A side note which may help you guys my 08 sunroof had no rust but the gasket seal tore. Sub $30.00 part on a '10+ 4runner... $680 (Canadian cheaper in USA) to replace on 4th gen no separate gasket for sale. Called dealers across USA and Canada part not available. I'm just lucky I caught the gasket before the rust set in. In the end it did not help, had to replace the whole unit. *HOWEVER* I learned how to replace the unit yourself with in my case the help of my Wife in about 15 minutes start to finish!
I live in northern Alberta and our shop labour rate is $190.00 an hour… So they quoted $760 for the part (not the 680 everyone else charged) So I was looking at a rather large bill to replace a .15 gasket. So I did some searching to try and do this myself I came up with the below info.
*If a dealer tells you that it will take 3.5h to replace the sunroof... If they are full of it!
TSB-0289-08 Moon Roof Stuck/Improper Operation, Figure 16 will show you the trim pieces (covering the 4 screws holding the glass & frame unit) and the 16b will show you the 4 Torx screw locations and torque values).
Funny thing is this TSB which includes removing and replacing the sunroof, and messing about with the track systems quotes 0.9 hours labour not 3+. Added benefit is the 3.5h procedure includes removing all the rear side interior, B pillar, door trim etc, etc as they are in the way of removing the roof liner which this TSB shows is not required to replace the glass/frame unit. (+ no chance of having to chase squeaks and rattles when your done!)
Perhaps if you can show the dealer that it will not "cost" them much labour they will be more likely to cover this under their "Goodwill" policy.

Additionally, Mr. xxxxxxxx, I have contacted our Product Quality engineering department regarding your moonroof issue and the brake caliper seizure you mentioned. There are no service bulletins, recalls or even design changes to the parts involved.

At this point your concerns have been documented and we appreciate your comments. We are sorry to learn of your dissatisfaction and wish to assure you that your opinion and concerns are important to us. The goodwill offer to split the glass sub assembly replacement for the moonroof remains.

I still am working to get you the answers regarding your service department experience at Daytona Toyota and will follow up with you directly once I have the answers regarding this specific dealership's business practices.

I'm pretty pissed about it myself, this is my first Toyota, possibly my last. I bought it certified from a Toyota dealer, this I would expect from a buy here pay here lot, but to not stand behind your product, and jack up the cost of install to make me feel like it's truly a 50/50 cost split makes me further upset.
