Help me identify this sound, please!

I just replaced my head gasket and now I'm getting this sound. Could this be something to do with the timing? It looks pretty perfect, but this is my first head gasket job.

I hear two think. A low end vibration (likely a wrist pin a bearing with slop in it). And the noise you are referring to IMO is the timing chain guid, either you reused the old one and it is cracked or bent, or the new one may be installed wrong. Based on where the noise is (not louder on either side) I suspect the front of the block, and the noise sounds like a card in a bike spoke (so to speak) and the timing chain guide makes sense. Again IMO

Valve tapping? Adjust the valves maybe?

Its valve train related, the noise is a lot faster than crank rotation. Pull the valve cover and check for valve's for proper adjustment and the timing chain for slop as stated above.

Yea I just thought about it, small gear driving a bigger one. It was 5am over here and i actually knew better. Ya got me.

For further diagnosing, pull one spark plug wire at a time, run it. If the noise gets quieter or goes away, that cylinder is the problem or at least part of it and its most likely a rod bearing or wrist pin.

If the noise doesn't go away its not the bottom end. check the repaired areas, timing chain, valves, head, etc.

So why would there be wrist pin knock? I didn't touch the bottom end, and it made no noise before I took it all apart.

Could be purely coincidental, might not even be the bottom end. Fact is you have to rule it out before proceeding.
