Help me prioritize my to-do list:

I picked this truck up about 2 months ago... it has 270K miles on it, The engine was replaced 50K miles ago and runs great but the body is starting to show some wear. At the time of purchase, I admit, I did not know a lot about cars. After spending a LOT of time on this forum and a lot of other reading , I can now find my way around an automobile.

Here is a list of things I need to do:

  • Inner/Outter Tie Rods (Driver side ITR shows a little play and clunks when rocking the tire back and forth. Heard it's best to replace both at the same time.)
  • Lower Ball Joints (Showing no play at the time but I know how dangerous it can be, especially with this many miles.)
  • Shocks/Struts (From the looks they appear to be the originals! :wow:)

I truly appreciate any advice I can get. I have 2 small children who often ride with me so safety is undoubtedly my #1 concern.

Since it's all suspension related I'd do it all at the same time. Then get an alignment. If you can't afford to do it all now I'd do the LBJ's now and then ITR's. Are you going to lift it? If so pick out the lift you want before doing shocks etc..

I suggest you do the LBJs and tie rods then the suspension.

You can get Toyota parts at ~ 25% discount off list price from Camelbak Toyota Parts ...

I'd stay away from AutoZone or Moog. Napa is pretty respected on the forums but I prefer Toyota OEM. For the ball joints do not buy MOOG --- really suggest on the LBJs you get real Toyota part. Lots of threads on this topic.

Thanks for the input, guys.

I was looking at the Raybestos LBJ's on Rockauto as I've heard some pretty good things about them. But if the OEMs have lasted this long, I might as well invest in quality that will last.

For those that have purchased LBJs through Toyota... Do they come with bolts, castle nut, etc?

Comes with a new castle nut but not bolts, you can buy them separately.

I cannot say as I did not install mine but suggest you try this into Google:

Code:
site:toyota-4Runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/ LBJ

That will give you very specific results

Wondering about the Raybestos LBJ's myself. Around $50 on Amazon. Anyone tried them?

With a part that has such a devastating consequence if it fails I would only use recommend OEM from a Toyota Dealer. Period. End of story. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.
