help me with my truck please!!

Hey everyone, im new to the website, actually just joined yesterday, i am the proud owner of a black limited edition 1998 4runner. Ive owned it for about 2 years but never thought of doing any work on it. Recently i stumbled upon this website and have seen amazing 4runners and saw just how amazing my car is. At the moment im looking to add a cold air intake system to my truck but cant find one, i looked into AEM but they only have a 2.7L version, i saw K&N but have seen soem bad reviews so idk about it and volant only has one for 99-03 in the 3.4L and one for the 98 but only for 2.4/2.7 L. Please help!!! i really want to get started on this project ASAP

My advice is, don't. Use your money towards some sort of mod that actually benefits your truck. Toyota's engineering team probably spent countless hours and $$ designing the intake to optimize performance and any aftermarket setup will likely do nothing but make it sound different (and at the cost of performance without any other major mods).
 
For about 10 dollars you can do an ISR mod and Deckplate mod. I have done them both, and am glad I didn't dish out all the money on something I was able to do for 10 bucks. Save your money and do something else. Maybe like a new exhaust system.

DIDO, ive got a K&N and i would have done the deck plate and ISR if i had known about it.

In all seriousness I have the Volant intake and love it, It may be the culprit of getting good MPG's in the summer but I honestly can't prove anything until I put it on a Dyno. This topic is a dead horse and there are a TON of threads on this already with different opinions. Ask that same question in the google search on the top bar and you should find enough info to help you decide
 
Thanks for the info ppl, I have been doing some very tiring and extensive research and after reviewing many things and forums and written reviews I think I'm definitely doing the deck plate and intake elbow that resembles an isr intake since I don't have much experience nd don't want to mess up the mass air flow hose. Any comments? Any advice would be appreciated

Not good with a screen name of zooroadbaja. Get down south. I preran from bay of LA to San ignacio in my 3rd gen with just a sanoran steel 1.2, was slow going but did fine. Clapped out my bilsteins in the rear though. Time for some TC upper arms and good coils and 2.5's with res in the rear, and i think she will be ok.
If you ever want to go, let me know, we do all the score races.

I use to chase for the Full Throttle Class 1 Team, which was associated with Damian Jefferies, and when I was working with Giant Motorsports we would do a few preruns. But I haven't been since things started to heat up down there. I heard it's back to normal again. One of these next races I'll hit you up and head down with you. Who are you associated with? PM me if you want, I don't want to jam up this guys thread with our convo.
 
Cold air intake is a waste of money just do this for about $10 and also take out the silencer!


Oh and buy and afe pro dry s filter and call it a a day!!!
 
I will echo what has been said here on CAI systems. I had one on my 94 T4R and all it did was make extra noise. I had a Borla cat back system and even played with a cat bypass with no significant gains. CAI are not really needed until you are exceeding the ability for flow on the stock system. An example would be my 2011 STI. Even with the mods and the car putting out 297 hp at the wheels the stock setup still wasn't a restriction. The tubing size and airbox size in the suby is similar to our stock 3.4 system size. With the hp the 3.4 is putting out you would be hard pressed to ever max it out.

An area that can be addressed would be turbulence in the stock system but, with a low hp engine like the 3.4 you would have minimal increases if any. If there was an easy way to tune the 3.4, setting up air fuel mixtures, timing, advance, etc. you might actually benefit from an intake/exhaust. I know blah, blah, blah. Lol

If you want to improve the intake area clean up your throttle body and air flow sensor and throw in new o2 sensors with a set of plugs.
 
I had an AFE on my FJ and loved it. However for the 4Runner I agree with the others and say just do the deckplate and ISR mods. I've done the deckplate but not the ISR yet and I'm pleased with it.
 
Thanks with all the help and advice, I indeed have let go of the CAI idea and already ordered a deckplate, Will install as soon as it arrives and will be posting pics soon. Thanks a lot everyone
