HELP!!! MISS FIRE on every cylinder

Hey guys I bought a 97 V6 4runner last sunday. Got a hell of a deal on it cuz it runs a little rough. Took it to advanced today to get CEL checked. Came back with 10 codes. All have to do with miss fires or the cat... got one for every cylinder and random. Any ideas where to start. Looking for a solution for this problem? Thanks in advanced

Without any maintenance history, I'd definitely be doing spark plugs and wires and a vehicle of that mileage. This may or may not fix the misfires, but is a definite starting point and basic item to rule out. As for the cat code, you very well might need a new cat converter, or possibly just faulty O2 sensors- I'd be checking sensor resistance to start.
Good luck!

I was definitely thinking plugs and wires but I also find it odd that every cylinder is miss firing. I could see that being the problem for one missfire. Still definitely going to do them. Maybe coils would make all 6 miss?

Because you have misfires on all cylinders, the first place to look something common to all cylinders (fuel pressure/fuel pump/fuel filter, MAF/Air Filter, timing etc) and not cylinder specific (injectors, coils, spark plugs, wires, etc). Also, the ongoing misfire issue could have killed the CAT, hence your CAT codes.

Good luck

Ok. Makes sense that way. I got another question though. Since I'm kinda ballin on a budget. If you were in my shoes where would you start? I know it's not going to hurt to upgrades parts but I don't really have the extra money to put things where they aren't needed

Why don't you start by pulling each plug and check it.
If the plugs don't look good replace them and the wires, etc and see who happens. Then come back here with the results.

I bought plugs and a fuel filter. I'll put them in tomorrow the plugs are most likely old but doubtful that will solve. That would mean I have 6 bad plugs and if that was the case i don't think it would even start. I'm thinking it's got to to be one thing that every cylinder needs I could be wrong though

Make sure the plugs are dual ground. Use a torque wrench to tight the spark plugs.
What is the brand of the fuel filter?

Recently had this in my tundra.

I spent a small fortune plugs, wires, injectors, coil packs, ECM, timing belt tensioner........ nothing changed it at all. The dealer even gave up and would not even work in it any more.

In the end, it was so simple. The truck had been in some deeper water and it made its way into the fuel tank. So the truck was drinking water with fuel in it, causing a randome misfire randomly on all cylinders.

However, when buying a new to you vehicle, Plugs (NGK only), wires, fuel filter, air filter, tranny flush and oil change are a must.

Next, do timing belt, water pump and then tranny cooler.

Plugs unfortunately we're not dual ground and for some reason the fuel filter leaked. I put my old filter back in it after a good Cleaning. Seems to run a little better but not much. I also unbolted the upstream 02 sensor to check for clogged cat and checked Maf. Both seem to be working properly. Today I will get a new filter the right plugs and wires. Air filter and maybe some seafoam hopefully that will do the trick

OK so I replaced a vacuum line that had a small crack. Changed fuel filter. Changed air filter. Cleaned a few sensors. Unplugged the upstream o2 sensor. And ran seafoam through the gas tank. Still missing. I got the right plugs but I figured what's the point of new plugs with out boots. So I'll grab boots for them. Anyone have any other quick fixes I can try?

Also, the ongoing misfire issue could have killed the CAT

I thought curiosity killed the cat? Bhahahaha... ok that was bad.

The ECU will store codes as well. So when it was checked you might have well been looking at 18 years of codes, who knows. If you have an Android phone (does not work with Apple but others out there do) you can pick up a decent scan reader to view the codes. I bought this one for $23:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NLQAHS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I should mention it plugs in under the dash, just to the right of the gas pedal. I just keep mine in all the time.

Works great and I can view codes as well as other data right on my phone anytime. You can also clear all the codes and start fresh. If the CEL comes back on you can search the codes right from the Torque Light app, no guesswork needed. Then diagnose and check from there.

If you give us the specific codes we can also help with more specific advice, other than just maintenance items.

Codes were p0300,p0301,p0302,p0303,p0304,p0305,p0306 and whatever the cat code was I'm not very worried about. Just replaced the boots and wires also took a spark checker and checked wires and coils both lit up so I guess they work... I'm getting stumped

Wow, no kidding then.

Have you inspected your wiring? I've never seen it throw a code for every cylinder like that. You might have a short. I'd also double check all your grounds are good. Power can't flow in if it can't flow out.

I have not... I'm new to the 4 runner scene and never had a miss fire before so I'm not sure on where to start wire checking. I'm going to do a pretty good inspection of all the wires and hoses today again maybe something will be found

Did you ever clear the codes?

Did they come back?

Was it all at once?

What was the engine rpm then the codes happened after the clear?

How long had the engine been running from start up when the codes came back?

Lastly, is the CEL FLASHING?

Answering these will help us.

Don't replace any parts until you get a Blue Tooth OBD2 code reader for $30 off Amazon. Works with Android and Apple apps.

After replacing all the things I did. I decided screw I'll try all the boots 5 out of the 6 broke when pulling them off the plugs replaced all of them when doing plugs disconnected battery and boom no codes no miss at all. It's all solved drove it for a while and everything is good. I'm super stoked now I can start upgrading the exterior

Took her for a decent little drive and everything is still working as should. Def finely has no miss and cel has not came back
