Help, my head unit died on a bumpy trail today!

Went to check out the logandale trails today near Moapa, was very cool. There's a ton of different terrain to try out ranging from dunes to semi-technical trail crawling. When I was rolling down a bumpier hill I noticed my phones bt disconnect, then the screen flickered and went black. Couldn't power on at all and the reverse camera didn't work initially. Turned the truck off for a while and when I got back in I noticed the reverse camera working again, but the display would go black again as soon as I came out of reverse. I haven't checked fuses yet, it's dark already, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips I can try tomorrow morning? Is there a connector that could easily jiggle loose?

Sounds like something is loose, taking the dash apart is a bit of work I would let the dealer do it if u still have warranty in case it's more than a connection. I can't imagine a fuse blowing from a bump if that's the case u probably want to take it to the dealer anyway

Hi Lukesaysrelax,

Your HU fuses are the best place to start; there are two, a 10A RAD and a 20A RAD (for radio). Check to see if one is either blown or loose! Turn the vehicle off and then back on and see if that fixed the problem. If not, pull the 20A RAD fuse out and leave it out for a minimum of four hours; that will RESET the certification ECU back to it's default parameters! You can still use the truck, but you won't have any audio system; including the phone's BT feature!

Be sure to wait the full four hrs or you'll achieve ZERO results and need to do the reset over again! If you did it right you'll find that you've lost all of your radio preset stations... this is desirable and normal; please be sure to report back to let us know if the problem is resolved or not so we can follow through! Well neither of the fuses were blown, and they seemed to be seated properly. I pulled the 20amp and am about 2 hours into the wait. I noticed the rear view camera not working since I pulled the fuse, which makes me think the fuse is unrelated. I guess we'll see in another 2 hours!

The rearview cam is part of the navi system so that not working is a good sign, continue to count down and then let us know!

Getting access and checking / reseating all connections would be where I'd start. If still under warranty you may want to let Toyota do it.

Sounds like what happened to my 2016 Limited 6 days old 250 miles on it , I'm sitting at the Dealership now, head unit just dead. Service writter showed me some type of toyota bulletin on this computer about 4runner head units being dead. He said parts Dept, told him head units are on national back order 3-4 weeks minimum. I complained to sales manager and they agreed to swapped out head unit with another unsold Limited until replacement arrives, hope that last longer than 6 days! Sounds like Toyota knows something is wrong with entune audio system, kinda disappointed so far not something I would expect from a Toyota product, of all things a radio/Nav issue?

That is solid that they will swap one out for ya... but check the part numbers and make sure you get an updated unit when they finally ship.
