newbie here needing some assistance. 2001 4runner, and in the past two weeks the CEL, Trac, VSC lights starting coming on. I did some research and most info pointed to loose gas cap or bad gas cap. I checked and sure enough the gas cap was loose. Tightened up the gas cap and the 3 lights went off.
A few days later all 3 lights turned on again. I removed the gas cap and placed it on tightly and the lights went off.
Today, it happened again so I bought a new gas cap from the dealer and put it on. This time the lights didn't turn off, but I read that I can reset the CEL by disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes which I did when I got home.
Took off and within 10 minutes all 3 lights came back on, so I am assuming its not the gas cap. I went to AutoZone and apparently they do not check the CEL in CA, go figure!!
I'm trying to trouble shoot this on my own before going to a shop/dealer. Before I buy a ECU code reader which are expensive at autozone and pepboys, i thought i would ask if there is any other way to pull CEL code.
