Help needed with CV axels and the dust seals.

First off, im getting fustrated. Ive searched, Ive looked and dug into the archives. But something isnt making sense to help me get the answers im looking for. And im trying to get everything by the weekend in the most cost effective way possible

I noticed that on Napa website the passenger and driver side CV axels have the same part.

now i heard the cv's are interrachangable, but are they literally a direct swap?

If so then why would the dust shields(the ones im talking about are common issue if not seated correctly they leak) have different part numbers for passenger and driver side?


Now where exactly does this seals go?

what has my head scratching is if they infact interrchangable then why would the dust shields be different for driver and passenger? and how that would make them interrchangable?

what im trying to accomplish is I replaced my passenger side with a new NAPA one, and i wanted to do is get the old oem passenger side rebooted and slap it in the driver side since its cheaper than buying a new one.


I also noticed i have a little dent on this seal/washer whatever it is and i want to know if i should replace it, if so whats the part #?

Sorry if some of you will get mad because I made a new,thread but this will be the easiest way to get my info and maybe help the next guy if they run in into my situation, with CVS going out separately and trying to save $$$$

You've prolly figured out the new seals pictured go in the dif housing. If they aren't leaking I wouldn't touch them. Try not to hit them when you put the new shaft in.

^passenger side. Yes, they are annoying little (words). I threw mine in the freezer for a bit before I put it in. It has to be juuust so.

Personally I'd gently straighten out the dust shield and re-use. There are wiser people than myself who may tell you different. They would be the same on either side, just take off the one that's on the shaft going back as a core and use it.

to be honest i did not know the seals were inside the diff. but it sure makes alot of sense, cause if that said the cvs should be identical with driver and passenger and they only thing making anything driver or passenger orientend is the seals.

if i decide to reboot my currnet axel anyone have that part number for that metal washer on the cv?

Take the best one off whichever shaft and put it on the shaft you're keeping? They're important, but really there's not much to those shields.
Also, found a nice inner and outer reboot kit with grease and clamps from Toyota for mine (different shafts, or I'd give you the number) for surprisingly less than expected. I know the oe boots lasted way longer than any boot I've had on a parts store shaft so that's what I'm going with.

Dust shield #90304-80002
Toyota boot kit try 04438-35060, double check the number before you get it if you get it.
