Help! Newbie - Bought a '93 w/ Bad Trans.

Hi,
So I've been lurking for awhile and found a 1993 4Runner for $1000. Auto transmission issues but the rest of the truck was really clean. Towed it to a local trans. shop and........wow.

What should I do now ? It doesn't move. I'll try and do more research on here to find out common fixes / solutions.

Please tell me I haven't wasted a grand.

If you are paying someone to do the work, I second the above post. Pay them to install a manual. Since manual transmissions tend to be more reliable and resilient, you might be able to "risk" grabbing one out of a car at a junk yard.

If it was originally an Auto, there will be some conversion issues; but let them handle it. I think it will be cheaper in the long run. A new or rebuilt auto tranny can easily cost 2500 or above, and I wouldn't risk grabbing an older, used one from a junker as you may just be waiting for it to die. I trust manuals much more than auto. Simpler and longer lasting. Even if you lose a gear in a manual, it will usually not leave your stranded.

Anyway. That is my suggestion. Manual swap. If you cannot drive manual, you should def. learn. It is a great skill.

I've been reading about solenoids and such. Lots of info on here....

I put a 350 Chevy in a Volvo 245 a few years back, T-5 stick, lots of Fun !

I'm thinking a stick shift might be in this 'Runner's future.

5spd is where its at. i tried the automatic thing, its really boring!!

and why on earth would someone put a 350 in a volvo?

X4 haha I have owned both manual and auto yotas and the 5 speed is the best. I went through two autos within a year (3vze). I'm currently running a 5 speed on my 22re with zero problems.
