HELP! No shifting, no engine!

SOLVED: HELP! No shifting, no engine!

I got up early this morning to take a friend to the airport, and I had it in Park while I waited outside her house for about 5 minutes. When she got in, I put it in drive and let off the brakes, and I went in reverse. I tried to shift into drive, but the gear shifter is unresponsive (no resistance at any gear setting, it just flops back and forth).

I turned the engine off to try restarting, but I get no sound whatsoever when I turn the key and no start. I moved the shifter into park, but I don't think it actually went there, though it did lock and I had to press the park override to move the shifter again. Anyway, I put the t-case into N so that I could push it out of the middle of the road, but now it is disabled and I am waiting for the tow truck.

Any thoughts?

I checked my tranny fluid and it is full. Battery is not dead (lights work, headlights are fine). Not sure what else it could be. It's getting towed to the nearby meineke, but I'd love to get some advice here.

That is what it sounds like. The shift linkage came undone. Crawl under the truck and see if you can move the linkage by hand.

^^ I agree. When you shifted to drive it made it to reverse and then the linkage failed. The shift lock is part of the shifter, not the trans so that explains why it locked even though your truck wasn't in park. I installed a 1" BL the other weekend and was surprised how weak the linkage seemed when I adjusted it.

I suspected that but I couldn't see under there at 5AM when it happened. Once it got light I could see and you guys nailed it.

Rust got me again...

At least it's a cheap fix.
