Help, not sure what is going on

Ok so i went to 4runner after school and started her up and it was cold so it started and was "clickty- clacking" so i thought everything was warming up, but it didn't stop. So i shut her off and when i pulled the key out, she was still running,http://im.toyota-4runner.org/images/smilies/twitch.gif and after she cut off (without the key in), i started her back up and everything was normal.....And on most cold days, i will go to start her at i get a click once then try again and she starts.....Any ideas????????

The last problem with just a click sounds like a starter issue. If youre handy enough you can remove the fender and pull the starter to clean and/or replace the starter contacts. I'm sure theres a write-up on here somewhere. The other issue could very well be starter related also. I've heard of it happening once before. But I can't remember what it was exactly. Could be just the starter/ignition sticking. I would start by looking at the starter and go from there. Not a certified diesel mechanic here. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

Your second problem is the starter contacts beginning to go bad. I had the same problem not too long ago.

The first problem may have been the starter got stuck engaged.

ok thanks for the help on the second problem!! but the has anyone else had the first problem happen to them.....especially the running without the key?

I had a 98 corolla that stayed running after I removed the key. that problem was the ignition switch was worn-out. it was causing the starter to engage randomly, or not turn off etc. a few times the starter stayed engaged after the engine was started. terrible sound.
