Help! on FJ Coil/Bilsten 5100 Install

A long-time member here.

After reading this entire thread I thought I had a handle on the installation.

I have a 2004 V8 Limited 4Runner with a "shot" X-REAS system. Was looking to do the FJ coil/Bilstein 5100 shock replacement.

I recently purchased the FJ coils (2007 -2009 model year):

48131-35541 Front Coil
48131-35541 Front Coil
48231-35321 Rear Coils

24-239370 Front Bilstein Shocks
33-187174 Rear Bilstein Shocks

I dropped my truck off at my local shop with the parts and after several hours he called me saying the OEM parts do not fit and that he needs:


1. New upper spring mounting assembly for the fronts
2. Lower spring seats for the front
3. Upper shock mounts for the rear

I admit my knowledge is somewhat limited in this area but in reading all the posts re. X-REAS replacement installs I do not remember any mention of the OEM/stock parts not fitting and others being required.

Any feedback is most appreciated!

Having replaced my shocks recently myself I think you should try and do the work yourself. It really isn't that difficult and you would learn your vehicle better and have an understanding of how it all works.

If you don't want to or have the time, you might want to find a better mechanic. The 5100's for the front have new spring seats, you just have to install them the correct side up. Read up on it more and watch some videos online. There is a good video from Speedy's Garage, I think, where he takes apart the front strut of a 3rd generation 4Runner and puts it back together that is still relevant for our vehicles.

Hmmm.

Problem solved. All required parts (seats, etc) were packaged with the shocks but the installer threw out the boxes without checking. They stayed late past closing and completed the install. I will be curious re. the end results.

Glad to hear it. But that's why I try to do as much as I can. Post pictures when you get it back.
