Help on tire selection

I have a 2011 trail with 25k on the dunlops that came with the car. Want a good tire for my needs. I Drive 250 each week to fish and I go off road in the sand. Car is already great in the sand with the silly dunlops. I actually don't need to air down and usually only in 4wd without using low.

My last 4runner 07 sport I had the bridgestone revo's 2 now I am learning that the Cooper is a good tire.
I would love to go with the cooper's best for highway and I will keep the same size because with my revo's it messed up my tire pressure light and could not fix that. I want to improve my 2011 trail so I would appreciate your suggestions on tire and size......thanks

I'm a huge lover of Revo II's (LT)..I drive about 400-500 miles a week...all weather conditions...and about 2% off road and have never been stuck, and went places that others with more aggressive tires couldn't.
 
I have the Toyo Open Country AT II's - awesome tire, great on-road drive and they have been great off-road so far. I should of went with the LT's as I want to do more aggressive off-roading eventually (lesson learned) but the "P's" are doing well so far!

Dunflops are an absolute crappy tire for any wet surface.

Not too certain on the BFG recommendation. I think they go 60,000+ cause they get hard as rock after 20,000 miles. Super noisy. Bad wet road traction accelerating from dead stop (new and even worse when they turn to stone). Just terrible in mud. I've heard (not verified) that the rubber compound is super old technology and that's why they get hard. Most here have gone away from them. I still run them but will sell them soon.

Not my experience at all and this is my 6th set on 3 different 4Runners.
"Super noisy", no, not anything like MT's. Mild hum is more like it. I barely hear them in my '14 TEP. Wet pavement traction is great and also on glaze ice which we have a lot almost every year. They have a lot of "siping" built into the tread. Every sipe gives 2 edges (feathers) that provide traction.

NO regular AT tire is built for mud.
 
I had BFG ATKOs in the past and I agree its good, however if you want a compromise and just a little less "humming" noise, you can go with BFG Rugged Terrain, which I have now and very happy with them. The tread is slightly less aggressive than BFG AT, but still has off-road capability, but mainly good as a DD on highways.

Apples and oranges.

Revo 2 must have been P-metric.

The BFG comes in LT only. LT Revo 2 matches the BFG tread life easily.

For the record, the P-metric tire would have been delivering better road traction while it was sacrificing those rubber particles and the miles per dollar calculation probably looks similar.

Notice how everyone has a different opinion and thinks that *they* are right? You're better off making up your own mind, or going with the choice of a contributor you trust.

Not my experience either, after having 4 sets previously, and just put a set on my new '14 Trail. Had Revo's previously, and the first gen. were great, second gen. sucked. Both on same vehicle - 2011 Tahoe Z71. Second set wore very quickly.

Not to mention that it probably the most discussed topic on the forum and there are a gazillion searchable threads.

To the OP, Read, read, read, and search some more and come up with a choice that meets your unique needs. You can tell from how each of us uses our vehicles as to what tires match our needs and therefore what might work for you.

FWIW, I have really liked my Goodyear AT Wrangler Adventures that I recently got.

I have Revo 2s on my truck and like them a lot, but got the Adventures for my 4Runner based on reviews comparing them to the Revos and BFGs. The Adventures are expensive as hell, but so far I think they have been worth it.
 
I personally get sick of searches, but someone always has to mention it and others just help out.

I put 80,000 miles on a year, there is a reason why the BF KOs always come up, they set the bar for truck tires, I consider the T4R a truck.

My experience:

Revo's 20,000 miles and shot, great looking and riding tire.
Michelin AT2 40,000 miles.
KO's 6 sets 50-60,000 miles, and pretty ugly at 50,000 miles
Running the Toyo AT2 extreme now, 8,000 miles and no wear, nice tire.

Agree on the no AT tire is good in mud. Problem for me is , the ATs do better than MTs in the sand and I wheel a lot on the beach and am too lazy to air down unless totally necessary. Kind of looking for something in between. Next set will be Nittos. I really liked the BFGs until they turned to stone. You guys don't have that issue? My tires have not worn at all over the last 8000 miles. Literally, the rubber is rock hard! If I keep them, I'm pretty sure I can get 80,000 miles.
 
Never, ever had a set of Revos I didn't get 40K out of before I got rid of them(and THEY still had tread...I think they would've made 60k easily.

Upside was I sold the 40K+ Revos for $300...the same day I advertised them..cant imagine what or how have to do them to get 20K
 
Surprised no one has mentioned Duratrac's yet... they're a decent all-around tire.

I do, however believe some guys have had some issues with the sidewalls on tougher obstacles. I have Duratrac's on my Tacoma and they've served me well.

Yeah, it's all about how you use them and that's going to be different for all of us. I've gotten 90,000 out of 2 sets and yes they do get harder and louder towards the last 10,000 or so. I run them at 45 psi on the street and 25 psi offroad.

I don't have access to sand but I do like the fact that the sidewalls on the BFG's don't get damaged by sharp scree rocks when aired down. That's a big consideration for me and part of their design. I've had OEM tires and lesser AT's only go 20,000 because they tear up too fast.

While I'm on the street most of the time, when I do off road, the off roading I do is hard enough that I need a serious tire to get me back home. The BFG's have always met that requirement and I've had no issues on the street with them. For me, that's the ideal tire.

I have to plan for the worst environment that I'll drive in and the rest is a compromise. I don't want to run 2 sets like those in the North do with winter tires.
