Oh! I have a few questions too...

First, after we surrounded the tires with as many rocks, dirt, and wood as we could find, I aired down the tires. Every time I would try to ease out of it, I would reach this point on the gas pedal where the car would start shaking pretty violently. What was going on there?

Second, it seemed like the 4wd wasn't sending a lot of power to front wheels. I was on about a 20 degree slope, but they still seemed like they weren't doing anything at all as far as spinning. It was really making us wonder if the 4wd was even on at all.

Was your center diff locked?

I thought the front diff gets locked when in 4WD on our 3rd gens, no? I was definitely in 4WD (4hi before stuck and 4lo after getting stuck with the rear diff locked).

4WD just means all four wheels have power going to them, it doesn't mean they are all spinning at the same speed. Rear locked means both rear wheels spin at same speed, front locked is front spin at same speed, center locked is front and rear spin at same speeds.

If a front tire is slipping, all the power to the front will go to it if the center/rear is locked.

Ah ok. Can't see anyone's sig from my iPhone using Tapatalk. So having the '97 means he essentially always has a locked center diff.
