Help Sought - Built 3rd Gen FS

Huge fan of blue actually... My school colors for high school, undergrad and grad schools, all blue and yellow.

That Stellar Blue Pearl 4Runner looks sweet. Would love to get one that color, but I can always change the color later I suppose.

It seems that fewer are coming on the market these days...

Anyone here somewhat near the airport? I'm aiming to check-out a 4Runner that the owner says is 20 minutes away, looks to be northeast of the airport.

I'd be glad to pay some money of course. 20 bucks? Maybe that's not enough...

In the San Jose airport, got a text, he just sold it! Damn.

$4,200 for a '98 Limited, 190k, original owner, all records, WP and TB done at 180k...

Oh well, the hunt continue....
 
The wife and I are also based in the Bay area, it took us about 9 months of searching to find our 2000 limited with the e-locker. Although I did look on the SF Bay Craiglist, I found that 4runners were being posted, and selling for $1000 to $2000 less a few hours out of the Bay area. The one we eventually bought was on Stockton Craigslist, and we actually got a fair price on. We drove a few hours a couple times to test drive contenders that we eventually turned our noses up at. It took a while, but it was being bought as a toy, so we had the time. Good luck out there!

Still looking. Month five, so your post offers some encouragement.

That said, I'm zeroing-in on one. The seller is unable to produce the vast majority of receipts due to a recent move/relocation. He just provided to me a CARFAX and is willing to split the cost to have the truck inspected by a mechanic of my choice. This will include a compression check. It's wet under the engine, steering rack. Not a lot, but enough to merit some interest. Seems that it might be coming from the valve covers...

If the TB and WP was not done, can an inspection determine that; or if those look be in need of replacement? Hoping to get the most out of this inspection...

You'd have to trust the sticker on the timing covers (if one was used). Otherwise, it is a bit much to ask to pull the cover on a normal used car inspection... It might require removing the top radiator hose to really get an idea what is going on under there.

Maybe you can use the fact that he can't produce proof of TB/WB maintenance in the negotiation if he is an honest and motivated seller.

Perhaps he'd be willing to lower the sale price by half of what the inspection mechanic would charge to do the job assuming OEM parts are used. I'd almost prefer that, then amazon the Asin kit and do it myself along with a new rad and hoses.

The seller should be able to tell you when the timing belt was done. $500 to $800 service cost ... Umm yeah they would remember. Even if they didn't have receipts they should remember it happening and the shop. This isn't rocket science.

If they can't provide the info then assume it wasn't done and start lowering the offer. Cash in hand and low offer goes a good ways.

Most shops keep service records based on the VIN. If the seller can't provide when it was done, who did it, where it was done then ... It wasn't done. All they would need in order to determine the shop is the name of the shop. If they can't provide then it was never done. Frankly I believe not doing the timing belt is probably the most common occurrence with non-builds.
